Malaysia: GM Chee Kim Tong and Master Yap Ching Hai Philippines: Beng Kiam Association, Master Alex Co Alex Co also wrote a book on this art with Chris Ricketts. He can be contacted thru Bakbakan International website. http://www.bakbakan.com/ It is true that there are striking similarities in both technique, kata and theories. This art comes from the Fukkien province that the Okinawan masters like Miyagi spent most of their time while in China. Cheers! There is some guy down south (Georgia?) who teaches it Buddy Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 04:17:04 PDT Subject: eskrima: filipino masters My apologies to "kev". I erroneously thought HE was writing a book on the masters! Instead he's reading Wiley's Martial Culture book. Sorry about that blokes... but the info on Carlos Navarro IS correct! I know a few drummers with reduced hearing loss. Since the 90's, young drummers have been encouraged to practice with ear plugs. I know that this sounds kinda wimpy. ------------------------------ From: sakinney@ix.netcom.com Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 07:07:26 -0500 (CDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: Pocket Hobbit While I don't have any experience with REKAT's Hobbit model, I do own one of their other models. They are a very helpful company to deal with, and would be happy to answer questions over the phone. (They're not so swift on email, but great on the phone.) I particularly liked that getting a left-handed version of any model was no big deal to them. From what I understand, the Hobbit was designed specifically for reverse grip, but then you probably already know that. Noting Kev's desire to write a book on masters, he might want to also consider Carlos Navarro. CN is from Cebu, though presently lives in Brisbane, Australia. He practices a style passed on to him from his grandfather and father. He himself is 73 on November 4. He is a friend of DOCE PARES family, though his style is markedly different. He refers to his style (in english) as Black Eagle Arnis Eskrima. I'm of two minds... on one hand, I want to one day participate in a serious catfight, or even cats against dogs - and I will probably wear some blue paint in honor of my celtic ancestors. On the other, I want to be a participant because of my ability, not because I may or may not be willing to wear chain mail & leather. I am willing to assume that the female participants a) got carried away, b) weren't clear on the rules for some reason, or c) simply did not realize that the Gathering is more about the MA than about personas, however interesting and flamboyant. Even the SCA (for whom I have great respect) has rules of behaviour, combat etc, although everyone knows that sometimes people get carried away. I hope that was the case, and that women will continue to participate, so that eventually when I get there (oh please, oh please), I won't have to resort to the historic woman warrior's subterfuge of disguising myself as a boy. There is, of course, a whole potential thread on the perception of women as warriors...I'll go find a list for it ;) (sort of off topic: I highly recommend Esther Friesner's collections Chicks In Chainmail & Did You Say Chicks - in the fantasy section at fine booksellers - funny, stereotype-bashing stories about sword & sorcery - I especially recommend the story "The Growling":) Respectfully, Jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 07:06:20 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #405 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
