Kautz" Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 10:37:14 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Pocket Hobbit This knife is a beast, and a real handfull of trouble. It needs a special kydex rig to cary it well, which is included, and allows for amazingly fast draws since the knife is designed to "break away" from it in a sense. It opens very fast on the draw, also. The knife its self has perhaps the nastiest serations - really more like saw teeth - on the spine that I have ever seen on a folder (and on most fixed blades, too). It works like magic from the reverse grip. On a technical level I think this is one hell of a sweet fighter. However... It is WAY too much for me to personaly wear on a daily basis, but my friend who owns one likes to, and has no problem with that. Difference here is in body size / mass, and also in the willingness to routinely cary a knife which is a) expensive and b) quite obviously designed for no purpose but combat. Not that I go for a small knife, mind you (Cold Steel XL Voyager), but one that is a "little bit" more low profile, and one that I might be able to explain away. You can't really tell an officer that you "cut rope at work" or "open boxes" with a Pocket Hobbit. Hope this helps, Pete Kautz ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 15:46:59 +0100 Subject: eskrima: mobile phone Has anyone looked at the use of their mobile phone as an effective weapon? The latest model I have has a non expandable ariel and is just a short stub. Having dropped it a few times I have been impressed by its toughness and began looking at it in a new light. As a hand held object it is very defensible to over zealous authorities should you have to recount how the attacker got poked in the eye. I also know of one guy having his knife neatly tucked behind it(with the aid of the leather case) mainly in order to by pass the x ray machines at airports. Has anyone looked into this? Potential uses I can think of is a fist loader, stabbing object, projectile. Maybe someone out there has customised theirs further? pat ------------------------------ From: "soren" Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 07:43:09 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: Hearing loss > Do older escrimadors experience hearing loss due to training? I know a few > drummers with reduced hearing loss. Since the 90's, young drummers have > been encouraged to practice with ear plugs. I know that this sounds kinda > wimpy. When I have attended classes where students used untaped hardwood sticks I have actually felt pain from the noise. Since I already have some hearing loss from not wanting to be "wimpy" when I was younger (shooting guns, loud music, working in an auto shop all w/no hearing protection) I have worn earplugs at those classes, mostly during the periods when everyone was practicing sinawalli at the same time. Wimpy or not, earplugs are a good idea if you feel that the noise is uncomfortable, although they can be disconcerting when actually sparring (I don't wear them then). I don,t care for the quality of products at I&I, and Kris Cutlery doesn't have flat ones anymore. Hint: Pappy dog can pick some up if he goes to Grand Tuhan Gaje's training camp and sell them on his web site. If others out there have any info, it would be much appreciated. Also remember to bring your sticks when you vacation in Hawaii. Missed the post for that long last week. Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My Sifu, Bonifacio Lim, teaches in Plainsboro New Jersey. As far as we know we are the only legit school in the US. I have also had the chance to go to Lodi NJ and meet the members of Bakbakan. Mr. Co's book is good for starting fundamentals, if used correctly. I asked about Ngo Cho Kun earlier in the list because I would like to know some more of its other branches of Schools. I find that the history of Ngo Cho Kun is very interesting. Okay, enough small talk - could someone help me find out who is teaching this style in Georgia? Salamat! Ingats - Pat ps - Mr. Co's book gives an accurate depiction of the similarities between Ngo Cho Kun and Karate. Very well done. ------------------------------ From: tweeder199@aol.com Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 15:02:40 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: -- Filipino Martial Arts Thanks for all the responses regarding the Filipino martial arts in NYC. An excellent read! Well researched, excellent bibliography, and so well written that it is difficult to put the book down. Of course this book or any other will not make you an accomplished knife fighter, but the historical, cultural, and personal references spread throughout this book make it a must read. IMHO.
