From my own experience at bouncing, women were always the worst to break up, they will more than likely be having the full arsenal at work, kicking, punching, biting, scratching, gouging, pulling, you name it. Generally speaking woman are not taught to fight so they fall back on pure instinct, something that has been bread out of most men. From the time men are little, weather they train or not , they are told that kicking , scratching and pulling hair is for sissy's, and not for survival. Many a times in a bar I have told myself or fellow workers after breaking up a "Cat fight" that I was sure glad that the 6'0" tall 200lb men didn't fight with that intensity, most of the time. Which leads me to say something that breaks many a martial artist hearts. It is the intensity found in woman, along with a more controlled execution that makes street fighters/bar room brawlers so dangerous able to beat most martial artist. I believe if you could see into the mind of 2 fighters in the street about to go at it you would see something like this. 1st the highly skilled superior martial artist ( I hope you detect my sarcasm ) " ok first I'll enter zone number 127-A by bisecting the adjacent angle closest to his linear position, giving me a positive pitch to his incoming power, which I will easily zone through using my superior savate tech.. Then by moving throught zone 43-b I will trap his lead arm using a tung soa/lop soa combination, thus closing to zone E17 continuing into my limb destructions thus closing in to Djuru # 3 range and finishing with a Japanese wizard followed by a Katch and hook fig 4 strangulation, yea yea that's what I'll do. Hey why does my face hurt so bad!! What!! the fight already started!!! that's not fair I wasn't through with my plan!!! Not fair FOUL FOUL !!! And now the thought's of a real fighter " DA I will break him into little peace's". And guess what he usually does. Why? because the street fighter has done what Bruce Lee use to preach, he has simplified his method of destruction to its purist form, and used all weapons available to him in their simplest forms, like scratching, pulling, biting and gouging, primal instinct mixed with experience. And unlike most martial artist, the street brawler gets his experience from experiencing the real thing, most martial artist get their experience from practicing controlled situations, in a controlled environment. Just try to fig 4 around a true street fighters neck with your legs on the ground and he'll chew your leg or weenie off, he doesn't care! I remember my father telling me that my Grand Fathers friend, an old polish wrestler that was in a Russian concentration camp with him when the Ukraine was conquered, actually sucked another fighters eye ball out of the socket!!! I am not sure of the validity of this story, but I am sure it is possible, an probably not something too many martial artist have ever thought about, its far to primitive. I always tell students that martial arts is simply sensible street fighting, don't put to much into, fancy terms, plans, or instructors that can dazzle you with their intellectual ideas better than a politition. Its like the gun know it all's who can tell you everything you ever want to know about a gun, except what its really like to shoot or shoot at someone. You don't want an instructor who has a BA or Ph.D. in B.S, you want an instructor who is a BMF in the real thing. Many of my students especially my JKD guys (Relax I meant it in a good way, they usually are very well read and informed ) aways seem to be amazed when they find out that my entire martial arts library consist of about 6 books and 1 or 2 tapes. I tell them most of the stuff I see out their is just to complex for me!! ( my wife and I wear argueing once, I and I made the statement " don't argue with me I went to school.... STUPID!!, She said yea and you came out the same way") I think the best books I have ever read on the martial arts are the Bruce Lee fighting methods book, they are simple direct and packed full of pure basic very effective tech.. that will work, I encourage everyone to read them. The rest the stuff, well they look great on you book case. All in all what it boils down to is that a lot can be learned from a "Cat fight" pound for pound I don't think anyone will argue the point that a cat is one of the most feared predators on earth. except maybe an IRS agent. If so, ignore and do not re-post >> The same would probably apply to a spear, but how about a >> 4' to 6' staff? > > Unless you were an old man, you'd just look... weird. Hell, I qualify on both accounts:-) It was just an assumption for argument's sake. 4' staff (jo) is not all that long and could perhaps be disguised as a cane. In areas with a lot of outdoor activity people carry trekking poles. I am not sure if the high tech ones would be any good in a fight due to their extreme lightness. >Depends on where you are. If there's lot's of open space, maybe. If you're >going to be indoors a lot, a staff is impractical. > No question. But a 36" sword is going to be awkward in a telephone booth also. We are talking law of averages here. Presumably that is why the samurai carried two swords of different length and a tanto. >Another problem with the staff is you can't keep it on your person. What if >you have to eat or go to the bathroom (Oh no! Not THAT thread again :) )? A >sword or a knife is a lot more accessible in such situations You can always use your long staff to prop the door of the cubicle shut to keep it from getting kicked open:-) >I think that a stick/sword is much easier to learn than a staff for the >following reasons: > > 1. Practical experience - In everyday life, we have much more experience in >using short rigid tools than long ones. Experience with my short rigid tool has not really helped me with stick fighting. >Take some sports for instance. Most people have played baseball, tennis (or >any sport using a racquet), golf, or hockey. Most of these sports teach >players to use short rigid paraphernalia in ways similar to >stick/swordfighting. Baseball = two hands, hockey = two hands (hockey stick is hardly a "short rigid paraphernalium"), golf = two hands (golf club = 36"). >2. Media - Star Wars, Zorro, Highlander... Even if a person has never held >a sword in his life, he has a rough idea from all the movies out there. Ask >anyone who has watched Star Wars: Episode one which lightsaber looks easier to >wield, Qui Gon's or Darth Maul's. I dread to think about what will happen to anyone who will attempt to learn sword/stick techniques from any of the above (you are talking to a Highlander fanatic, BTW). I love watching that stuff but never in my dreams would I consider it a model to build one's techniques around. The details of this consideration could fill three more pages. What impresses me is the different ways a long staff is handled in a demonstration and in a real fight (the few that i have seen): in a demo there is much fancy twirling and grip changes as well as hits with both ends of the staff. When it hits the fan it seems to me that the staff is firmly grasped at one end with the intent of bashing the opponent with the other and keeping him/her away as far as possible. But then, I would like to learn much more... Hi There I realise this is a little of topic but I hope you will all indulge me. I've been hearing a lot lately about the SCA (especially on this list) and I was wondering if somebody can provide me with some more information please (off list to JonHoward@Aqua-Pacifc.com is fine 8-) ). Specificially what the SCA is all about, what it get's up too and most importantly - do they have a branch, affiliation or know of any like minded individuals in the good ole U of K. This is an interesting point. I have heard many bouncers and bodyguards say that the worst fight to break up is one between two women. I have no opinion or experience in this regard but no doubt some members of this List will have much to contribute-snip Been there, done it and have the scratches. My first experience with women fighting when I was on the door was terrifying. I knew doormen that showed no fear but would not get involved with women fighting and whether that comes from their own inhibitions or the way women fight I don't know. Guys are brought up with the territorial chest beating that usually results in a few punches and a lot of standing in certain poses that symbolises defence of the territory. Animal has said to me in posts that this is more of a young mans game but I think bar the extreme it is the norm. IMO women never had that upbringing and so when it kicks off I have always seen them go full out and trying to prise the grip of the hair of another woman is suprisingly very difficult. These vice like grips come from an all out attitude where anything goes and all is justifiable. This isn't even considered until the emotion awakes. I could recount stories but I don't think that's required. I can only testify from my experience (over 10 years on the doors). pat ------------------------------ From: Magnus =?iso-8859-1?Q?Bj=F6=F6rn?= Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 12:56:39 +0200 Subject: eskrima: Sticks in New Jersey Does anybody know where I can buy good sticks in the New Jersey area.
