(yeah Rocky!) Patrick and others, I think you're right, and to elaborate on the point, I've never been in a physical racket with another woman (yet), but emotionally i've come pretty close, and the only thing which I think stopped me was that I didn't quite make it over that mental line, mostly because of my own neuroses & fears, but also because GIRLS AREN'T SUPPOSED TO FIGHT. I don't THINK i'm more likely now than before to get into it physically, but who knows. The point about women & streetfighters (Rocky's I think) going back to pure instinct makes sense to me - I guess training allows me to have something to "go instinct" with. The popular perception is that women give in to the "softer emotions" - love tenderness etc, and sadness, fear etc, whereas men are the big scary "violent emotion" people. So of course, if you're repressing it for a long time, when it does actually come out you tend to revert completely to the non-thinking, must cause maximum damage sort of fighting. Women do tend (in my experience) to have it out with each other verbally (and vicious doesn't begin to cover it ;), but when circumstance finally pushes us to physical aggression, all the stops come out, especially when fighting someone we consider our physical equal ie another woman. When fighting a man, however, we have been taught (generally) that they are physically superior and that resistance/rebellion is baaaaad. so maybe that's why women find it harder to mentally prepare to fight off men , and are more able to let go with other women. The reverse, of course, is that "good guys" won't hit a woman because it's wrong - they're smaller, weaker etc the fairer sex. And "bad guys" will. It seems that the most vicious, or at least ferocious-seeming fights are between two people who see themselves on the same level - evenly matched if you will. Question: if a "bad woman" is beating up on a guy, what do you do? Question: does training in the martial arts, and learning that you can hit things make women (or even men) more inclined to go the physical route? H'mm, any comments out there re: the merits of light weapons other than mine? Personally I'd prefer the lighter weapon. The issue is tensile strength and how much force the weapon can withstand before it will deform. Recently I've seen some titanium sticks on the web. Tres cool. The lighter the better as long as it doesn't bend when I smack something/one with it. If it's as strong/light as a long tibia (heavier bone of the lower leg) or femur (thigh bone) I'd take it over something heavier anyday. The reason I use the bones as reference is because bone is what I'd be targeting with the weapon. If it is as light as or lighter than and as strong as or stronger than the bones it might contact I'd opt for that. It's partially for this reason that I now prefer to work with 24" sticks. I use shorter ones fro "drumming" practice. I am slightly handicapped and walk with a cane I broke my back as a young child and now have some limitations so I know when to walk away for health reasons when ever possable. Evidently the one time he saw me sparing was enough to change him wanting to spar with me because he now believes I am bloodthirsty and viscous ''tis nothing to do with that I am just using all the advantages I have as a women when I fight or spar why should I walk away from my instincts just because I am getting formal training in Escrima and JKD it just gives me more tools and more advantages at my hand for when I need them to protect myself J bows deeply ------------------------------ From: Sam Beckett Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 13:48:17 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: FMA in Eastern Iowa? I think you may be mistaken. I've never seen Minerva in any of the kali classes there. As many of you observed, she would be hard not to spot in a small school such as that. The first time I ever saw her was at the gathering. From my vantage point Minerva didn't mingle with any of the FMA people, she stayed off to the side with her horse and her own group of people. If she's had any FMA training, Marc would be the one to know since he knows her best; the rest of us were just spectators. If she wanted or had any FMA training it would seem most logical that it would come from him.
