But all situations are prejudiced by public perception. Look at the two sides of the Rodney king argument that still rage on. I have had to fight my corner in courts against what people perceived as assault knowing that I had acted fairly and I actually won them all. So whether you deal with man or woman the way you deal with it is open to perception. Perhaps the reason we get shocked at the female ability to step over that line is just down to the way we perceive them. The ability of a doorman to be able to judge what is required at each time with regard to the audience is a hell of a hard job believe me. pat From: Michael Koblic > I wonder if for a man this is a no win situation: consider what you would do to a smaller weaker man who started scratching and biting you or such like. I suspect that you wold proceed to remove his teeth and re-arrange his anatomy without feeling too much guilt or wrath of bystanders ("the jerk was asking for it"). If on the other hand you tried to do the same to a woman under identical circumstances you would not come out smelling roses. Thus one would perhaps consider more restrained techniques with the result that one *might* sustain more damage than one would consider acceptable. Thus the smart policy in a catfight is to stay away. ------------------------------ From: tcsno Date: Tue, 05 Oct 1999 15:43:12 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Odds and Ends I was looking at some back issues of E-D and noticed a thread about ground grappling and silat. It was mentioned that Herman Suwanda had little trouble with a BJJ arm bar, and a harimau guy had a friendly roll with Chris Poznik. I find my Mustika Kwitang teacher has little use for my attempts at mounts, rear mounts, arm bars, and chokes. He can counter the ground stuff but prefers to fight standing, using a knee(shin) compression like a knee on chest. He also fights from a crab position, on all fours. Very exotic, but very, very, effective. Does anyone have similar experiences with experienced silat men on the ground?? Another issue is an ongoing thread on submissionfighting.com. It is about Jailhouse Rock. The most famous practioner, Dennis (of 'Lethal Weapon" fame) Newsome, was interviewed by a SF member. He talked about varous prison systems, African systems, and Capoeira. Burt Richardson posted that he met Newsome, and he seemed very racist. His words, not mine. Has anyone on the list been exposed to Newsome or Donald Pentecost of Folsum Prison Knife fighting fame??? We are willing to pay a group to come in. My problem is in locating such an organization or school that offers FMA. I am located in Elgin, Illinois about 45 miles west of Chicago. If anyone has a contact name or a FMA school in the area please email me and let me know! Thank you! ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1999 23:26:38 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: Dallas, TX. STOP IT! Have had to do so. My previous area that I lived in would quite often see people fighting out in the street in full view of everyone. Many times you saw men cowering from the wrath of their spouces. But there was one time when it really was bad. He was bleeding heavily and she wasn't going to stop. No-one likes to get involved in domestics but this was getting bad with all the kids out watching. I had to take the (dough) rolling pin off her and that prompted her friends to get involved in calming her down. Until my involvement they wouldn't dare. Time 2: One night a girl lashed fiercely into her husband as it turned out a woman with whom he'd had a not so secret liaison was in the same nightclub. It took quite a while to calm her down and she took exception with us stopping her. My partner went out on a night out with her friends a week or so back. She was challenged in the street by a girl who then attacked one of her crowd. Whereas before she might have just pushed the girls apart she took great delight in putting in her thigh kicks, clinching and kneeing along with controlling the hostile woman in her guard after they fell to the floor. The next day, while she was feeling very proud I sparred with her and beat her up!! ; ) In that case she was more inclined to hit but hopefully I will have maybe brought her down to earth to reflect on that now. Seriously. pat Aberdeen Martial Arts Group ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 06:59:11 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #415 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
