Yes, I've been in Ron's classes; obviously I missed Minerva's appearance. I must admit that Ron, because of who he is, does get plenty of visiting students in his class who aren't regular members of the school. From what I've seen, the bulk of the matriculating FMA students of SBJKD are in Willie's Wednesday night classes. I just didn't want anyone to get the impression that Minerva is a product of SBJKD. Filipino, Malaysian, and Indonesian groundfighting usually consist of biting(BTW please don't bring up the catfight in a response, I don't even want to go there) and pinching. Also, alot of close quarter styles utilize controlling techniques and have counter for counter drills that familiarize students with different types of energy wether pushing, pulling or twisting. Alot of disarm training can also be applicable to locks and holds when that close. Most of them are very hard if not impossible to put on an unwilling opponent at long or medium range. During clinches or groundfighting it gives you a little time to think, feel, and move accordingly. Suprisingly, at close range, you can see the hits(not always, but in most of my experiences, and remember that fear factor is always there when closing the gap and this affects your perception). Of course, Groundfighting, wether Japanese, Brazilian, or whatever, is always somthing good to be familiar with. I myself have never had formal groundfighting training, but tried to take what I know and adapt it. I have been on the ground and most definitely used pinches and elbows and squeezing the throat. Honestly, I don't like to go to the ground, but I know I can go there if there are no other choices. This is also why I carry a right and left handed knife. Hard to grapple with a knife. Of course you have to be prepared for anything, everything, and even more than that. Grappling can and does happen during fights with or without weapons. For the most part, I try to close the gap without getting hit, give a nice, clean hit and get the hell out of there without getting hit. If when I close, I can put more hits than 1, than I will. It is not my strategy to go to the ground. Also I don't like to have the gap closed on me unless it is my choice. Very easy to say, alot harder to do. Any feedback out there? ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It was mentioned that Herman Suwanda had little trouble with a BJJ arm bar, and a harimau guy had a friendly roll with Chris Poznik. I find my Mustika Kwitang teacher has little use for my attempts at mounts, rear mounts, arm bars, and chokes. He can counter the ground stuff but prefers to fight standing, using a knee(shin) compression like a knee on chest. He also fights from a crab position, on all fours. Very exotic, but very, very, effective. Does anyone have similar experiences with experienced silat men on the ground?? >> Great post! I wasn't around for that thread. What did Pak Herman do? Who is Poznik and who was the harimau guy? How does silat or FMA deal with these shooters? Unarmed of course.
