Which is a shame because there are some kids that are fantastic at martial arts and have great technique and a lot of parents do not seem to care to much about there kids and there lifestyle. I have a baby daughter (born August 1st) and I know I will do my best to encourage her in everything she does when she gets older. So I encourage children to get into martial arts when ever they choose to go an learn and shouldn't have it thrust upon them or else they will hate it I have seen it happen many times. I am only 15 years old and im not the most expecianced martial artist but i do have a love for it and respect it, im currently taking Do Shin Kahn and its coming along nicely (ive been in it for a year and a half now) and we have gotten the instructor (who is also one of my best friends dads) to start teaching the younger people in our class judo every day before the rest of the people show up. I can see how judo could be put to practical use almost more than jiu-jitsu and all these popularizing martial arts that focus on grappling. If you are confronted with someone who does not have excelent balance or martial arts training (most people) and you end up grappling as my instructor would say "You can dump them on the concrete and have the fight over with". another aimless rambling brought to you by justin parsons p.s if anyone knows of any do shin kahn sites or publications id apreciate you letting me know. its pretty hard finding stuff about it on the net since its not that popular. ------------------------------ From: AnimalMac@aol.com Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 12:01:32 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #421 In a message dated 10/9/99 7:57:40 AM Mountain Daylight Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Thanks for an eloquent way of saying teach the principles not just the technique (assuming I'm understanding what your saying). This is a point that has never failed to puzzle me...my experience has been in Goju-Ryu karate, and we never, ever, in all my years of training, insisted upon a "right" way to execute the kata. When I first saw the Silat djurus and the way the djurus were taught, it struck me how similar the way I was taught to interpret and appreciate kata was to the teaching methodology of the djurus. I was always taught to look beyond "performing" the kata, and taught instead to explore the kata...hence, we understand the kata and what it was meant for, rather than performing it in the proper steps, with the "right" hand positioning, etc. I know I am rambling here, but please understand that not all schools of Karate perform kata for the sake of rank promotion, with little regard to the application. Some of us really do practice kata as the basis of the art, and understand the application and purpose of kata. If you are having another experience this is sad, because kata is viable, it isn't a waste of time or an antiquated practice method that has no bearing in today's society. I find kata and Karate to be every bit as valuable, applicable, and realistic as any other art or teaching/training out there. Karate would not have survived as long as it has if it was any other way. My not very profound thoughts so far: Its natural for sons to imitate what they see their fathers do, and as mine sees me train there is a good chance that he will show some desire. I am impressed with the way the BJJ people go about it. It is FUN and NATURAL and yields impressive RESULTS in functionality, health and character. I will look for ways to appeal to his interest in this regard and give him all that he will take. Its probably not a good idea for me to impose. It is very common for sons to reject following in their father's footsteps. I certainly rejected following mine! (trust me, he wasn't a stickfighter!). I'm not too impressed with martial arts as a daycare center, but maybe as a way for him to experience others close to his age and size it may be a better thing than I realize.
