They grew up seeing it as part of our life and at some point they chose to follow the path.. kinda of... since I was there dad, what did I know!!:).. so off to the local TKD school to train... my son finally came around a little in his teens and would train in Eskrima and grappling with me...turned into a good stick fighter and decent grappler.. but wouldnt continue..who wants to workout with DAD! I started teaching kids in my school and work mostly Eskrima and grappling..they love it and while strict order has to be maintained when they have sticks in their hands its amazing how fast they pick up some pretty complicated drills .. 5 year olds are not quite ready for it but some 6 year olds and most older kids do great .. But my kids still refuse to train with me!!! go figure Regards, Don Edwards ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Mike Casto Date: Sat, 9 Oct 1999 21:32:01 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Djuru = Kata ??? << The problem at hand is how to keep students from slipping into these mental assumptions that what I am teaching them has the same associations and implications as what they already know. The best answer I have come up with is to forget djurus for the moment and only focus on the dusars (elements) that make up the djurus. When I think they have those and begin to see beyond kata, I will return to teaching djurus. Anybody have a better idea? >> I don't know if it's a "better idea" or not, but you might try it anyway :-) Before teaching a djuru, take one of their own katas (or maybe a part of one) and pick it apart like you do your own djurus. Maybe you can broaden their mindests by expanding on the material they already know. I had this happen with a Tang Soo Do guy I was playing with. He showed me one of his forms and were discussing it. He said that a particular movement was used to block a kick. I said, "OK, but what if, in that same motion, you pull a knife." His eyes got real wide and I could see little flashbulbs going off in his head as he realized the implications that holding a knife in his hand would have on the next few steps of the form. If you can get them to open up like this, then show them some other applications that require slight modifications in the form (i.e.: if you open your fist at point X, you've got an arm wrench instead of a punch to the ribs). Maybe by showing them the dustbunnies under their own beds, you can more easily illustrate the vorpal dustbunnies under your bed :-) Later, Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Everything i've ever done has been drills ect. for free sparring. even when give like ten different options to do as a counter i still drill each of the ten, even contra sumbrada free flow is still drilling counter for counter movements and timing although no set pattern is established. heaven six, foot work, knife tapping ect. all taught in drill form. even pure boxers drill certain combo's or when the freeder choses which punch or combo to throw (done by placement of the focus mits) the boxer is still drilling - is it just symentics - what i think of drilling isnt the the as your conception of drilling? eager to hear your def. and hear how you teach thats diff. thanx steve ------------------------------ From: "Ted Truscott" Date: Sun, 10 Oct 1999 13:14:29 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: slaves Crafty woofed: And, in a completely unrelated vein: "No slave shall keep any arms whatever, nor pass, unless with written orders form his master or employer, or in his company, with arms from one place or another. I was pleased to read the responses I got from every one both on and off list. Opinions varied quite a bit regarding age and style, but most people seemed to agree on about 5-6 and Judo style play - this was the kind of thing I had in mind (my son is just coming up to his second birthday), I suppose one of the best ways to develop and encourage (small) kids like this is through modified play at home - all kids like to wrestle and tumble around with their parents. Has anybody got a good "recipe" for making !safe! padded sticks - I'd like to start defining some hand-eye-coordination and improving juniors motor skills in the next few months. On a related note - I was recently watching one of Burton Richardson's tapes (I think it was the basic trapping one) and he mentioned the use of traditional dance in Penjak Silat Bukuti Negara (sp) as a training tool and how the moves relate to combat movements - a bit of sneaky training when done to the youngsters favourite nursery rhyme - "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a djuru of water" 8-) Several years ago I used to help my Jui-Jitsu instructor teach the kids on a Saturday afternoon and I can remember the "daycare syndrome" although what I always felt was worse was the parent who went to far the other way and would constantly interrupt the class to correct little Johnny's posture, actions whatever or to chastise them for not paying attention - oy veh!
