Nietzsche was a wise dude. The concept is reflected in Carl Jung (who owes a lot to N), though softened slightly: "there can be no growth without pain." I think, properly understood, these do not have anything to do with "macho attitude", which prefers to deny pain. These guys are talking about learning stuff that maybe you didn't want to know. If you're lucky, you survive such lessons and become a more profound warrior. That has been my experience as well, and I am amazed that I never stop learning something new as long as I keep looking. - -Bradley Ryan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Eric Shaver Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 13:09:23 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: AnimalMac Comments Marc, I wanted to comment on the following statement you (AnimalMac) made: "I think I should however mention a subsidiary problem that I am having. My students are going back to the TKD 'self-defense' and saying "This won't work!" There have been a few occasions where they showed other students (and once even the instructor) why it wouldn't work. I don't want to disrespect the head honcho or upset the applecart, because there are a lot of "never been in a fight" blackbelts who really believe that the systems self-defense would work. Yet they don't come and ask me." This is the main reason why I have never taken any formal martial arts. I have always lived in small town America which provides your run-of-the-mill karate and TKD schools (maybe an Aikido class or two thrown in for god measure). None of these schools seem to cater to self-defense although they make big claims to this. So I am forced to learn from books and videos. I know this isn't the best, but it seems to me to be less of a waste of time then performing numerous repetitions of katas day after day. After I finish my masters degree and move to a larger city to pursue my doctorate, then I hope I will be able to find a school that teaches "real self-defense." I have never been in a brutal fight (i.e. "I-am-going-to-rip-out-your-eye-and-skull-f***-you" type). I have been in your basic school yard and "saving face" type of fights. So I look to people who have been there, such as yourself, to provide me with guidance and knowledge as to what works and what doesn't when the "fecal matter hits the spinning turbine." I would be plenty happy if I trained my entire life to protect myself and loved ones and never needed to use it. I don't want to have to maim or kill, but if forced, I would hope that I have it in me (this is a topic for another time). So keep providing people like me with the facts and I will keep doing my best to learn what I can. I'd be interested to find out what those six moves were? My next question for the list members is if "expert" wrestlers only use a handful of tech. or moves why learn hundreds? Why not just practice six moves to perfection? ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 16:36:55 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #426 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
