I only train with my wife and son these days, but something that I used to do to weed out an undesirable or just to let someone know that we will all always have work to do: slow staggered/"bouncing" push-ups. I would say "OK, now let's FINISH 8 push ups." Once the grins and snickers had passed and all were ready I'd demonstrate a slow rep: Cross left ankle over right, then, 1) halfway up, 2) all the way down, 3) all the way up, 4) halfway down, 5) all the way up, 6) all the way down. That's 1 rep. Then we'd go through them s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y. Talk about grimacing, cringing, shaking, etc., and looks of disbelief! There were a couple of guys who could throw off mutli-pushups quickly who could barely do 4 of these, no jive. Not everyone coming in the door has the immediate needs that Animal related. Many people, perhaps most, require a progression to build up to actual fighting-- this includes mental, emotional, psychological as well as physical. I remember observing a seminar once while standing to a former criminal of substantial serious violent felonial experience. It was the first time he had seen a martial arts seminar and was a bit surprised. "Oh!" he said, "These people are the victims!" Woof, Crafty Dog PS: Concerning Nietzsche: Is this the Ray Nietzsche who was a feared defensive end, or was it linebacker, about 20 years ago for the Detroit Lions? I had no idea the guy was such a philosopher! ------------------------------ From: Ted Truscott Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 08:13:10 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: SDFW list? Jon... And even if it is so, since you mentioned nature, let's get Darwinian. You may have corrected your stupidity by losing an arm or having your knee torn up, but it doesn't matter. You will be the limping, week, crippled critter that is always culled from the herd. I am done with this thread. I will only close by saying that in any situation, tournament or street, I hope to meet the guy who has spent the extra hour on kata and not on the heavy bag or sparring. I suppose that is why we called it a martial 'art'. The art part of it is basically the expression of the 'flavour' of the particular system. In Silat, "rasa' (expression, emotional content, flavour) is an important part of Pencak Silat, without 'rasa' the Djurus or form is lifeless. The only time I have seen the 'flavour' of FMA was when Guru Loui Lindo of Vancouver performed a classical Espada y Daga 12 angles form he has learned from late Guru Ted Lucaylucay. Those of you who has seen Guru Stevan Plinck's tape on PuKulan Pencak Silat Bukti Negara will know what I mean by 'rasa' when he does the kembangan at the end. The expression on his face, the rhythm, and the tiny swaying of his head and shoulder like a snake ready to strike but relax, the thing he does with his hands, etc. They are distinctly in the flavour of Indonesian arts. Without practicing the djurus and form, I don't know of any other way to get there. Animal himself said Guru Plinck is one the most dangerous man he has seen in USA. And it was the djurus that got him there. Regards, Peter Lee, Fredericton, NB, Canada ------------------------------ From: "Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S." Animal, As for the Inosanto tribe the bigger the organization the bigger the problems and the more personalities. There are too many good people from there to mention. We are invincible however ;). IMO there are 2 ways to learn in school, business, and on the street...by hard knocks or formal education. I've done both the latter is way less painful. There is a lot of fruit left on the martial arts trees to experiance. But if you want to wield a tree trunk around that works too! When you get to be a frail old master even Gravity needs a little sofistication and refined elements. Regards, Carlton H. Fung,D.D.S.
