Ray Terry, PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011 FMA@MartialArtsResource.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Steven Drape" Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1999 20:38:54 PDT Subject: eskrima: Re: forms training >It is my belief that kata (read kata to include all the releated linguistic >variations) allow the practionier to experience the "heart and soul" of the >art, to appreciate what the original masters of the art were trying to >communicate (NOTE THE FOLLOWING COMMENT IS NOT MEANT IN A DEROGATORY >FASHION) in their often "un-educated" or "illiterate" fashion. It is the >difference between karate-do and karate-jutsu. Both are valid. I've spent the last 20+ years training in non-forms martial arts- mostly eskrima, but also a family system of Filipino kuntao. The kuntao system is based on the Chinese art of baguazhang, but over the last 90+ years (the time spent the since the family left China), the forms went by the wayside as Filipino fighting aspects were added, things such as dumog and pangamot. The system is now very combat-oriented, and is designed to make someone into a capable fighter in the shortest possible time, never mind how pretty he looks. There is no health (qigong) component now, either. The interesting thing to me now is that I am finding I have a real desire to go back and learn the forms that were taken out. I am learning the forms to try to fill in the blanks. The system as it is now became what it is because of very specific needs by individuals in response to specific situations. Their body-types and areas of skill differ from mine, however, and I feel that I would like to make some different choices. By learning the forms and comparing them with the structure of the system as it exists, I am finding so many other possible techniques that were never taught or even suggested, and things that may not have worked for my instructor, who was 5' tall and weighed maybe 120 pounds, work well for me, at 185 pounds! An example would be the standing grappling that I like to do that he told me to try to avoid. Actually learning to use the system before learning the forms, rather than learning the forms and then trying to get a fighting style out of them, seems to me to make a lot of sense. Since I already know how to move within this system, and I know where I would like to go with the particular energy my opponent is giving me, then learning the forms seems to suddenly expand my available options, or at least open my eyes to the extra possibilities. One last aspect is that as I get older, I find that the forms are an excellent way to maintain my general fitness, especially leg strength and flexibility. They also make solo practice much more interesting. 20 years ago, I wouldn't have benefited from this training, because I didn't believe there was any use for forms, but now I've adjusted my opinion. The cat claimed that his specialty of racing up a tree at the first sign of trouble had never failed him and the fox claimed that it was the knowledge of a thousand tricks that kept him alive. Of course, as they argued, a pack of dogs and hunters hove on the horizon and came upon them. The cat ran up the tree and the fox tried every trick he knew but one wiley old dog had been learning all his tricks over the years and kept the young ones to the task and sniffed him out to the delight of the hunters who shot him. Specialist 1, generalist 0. But wait, :::rewind::: the cat ran up the tree and the fox disappeared. When the pack saw the old fox go into his routine, they immediately gave up and turned their attention to the tree: "What is it, what went up there? Is it a coon?" When they realized it was only a cat, the boys were so peeved off they blew him out of the tree with their shotguns. Generalist 1, specialist 0. If we could only predict our future, we would know whether to specialize or to learn a bit of everthing; since we can't know, we can only do what feels the best for ourselves at the time. Train hard and good luck to you all in your choices! I thought I read something about it on a post a few months ago. I tell people that is probably the best all-around book on the subject, but they have to use various means to acquire it. If we put the collective power and energy of the subscribers to ED on this task, shouldn't we be able to accomplish this. Just a thought.
