I have been studying a blend class of Muay Thai, Western Boxing and JKD/kali for standup and Dumog, Shooto and Jiu Jit Su for groundwork. I love the class but because of the variation, it is necessary to attend a fair number of classes to keep in practice. As they have added classes to focus on specific areas, I have been able to only attend a limited number. I work 60+hr/wk, have two young children and don't like pissing my wife off by not being home. Which all translates into not getting to MA more than 3 nights a week. Which means that I can't use it for exercise. I generally try to use the gym at work a couple days each week; heavy bag work, rowing machine ~20 min, grappling warm-up (ab work), maybe light weights. In general I am pretty unsatisfied with the amount of time I can spend on this, but don't have much of a choice right now. I take heart in the fact that I am 24 and so can expect to still be doing this in 20 years. Check the phone book. Rafael Lovato is a certified instructor under Richard Bustillo, he runs Martial Arts International, I believe it is on Meridian, ( or possibly MacAurthur). He now is affilliated w/ the Machados and is mostly a grappling school I've heard. Mrs. Gibson is located in Tulsa, not OKC. USA Stars is located right off I-35 in Moore and has a Pekiti-tirsia program. Also a very good vale tudo program. < I currently live in Oklahoma City and I'm in search of a certified JKD instructor who could instruct me in the Inosanto Blend of Kali and the Silat arts. There used to be a JKD school nearby 'Spartan's Martial Arts' headed by a Guro Michael Parker but his school has long been closed now. Any information that you could provide me would be most appreciated. ------------------------------ From: "lee drew" Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 16:09:27 PDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #446 This question is unrelated to any particular thread going on at the present. My involvement in the FMA is principally for the knife and blades components of the arts. As such, I feel I can apply FMA (or any other style of edged weaponry) almost anywhere I choose to carry an edged weapon. For those of you whose focus in mainly stick-based, what do you carry to apply FMA at ALL times? Certainly not the sticks -- not ALWAYS(e.g., weddings? job interviews? PTA meetings?) I can already sense the wiscracks forming. But apart from ASPs, and of course the mano-a-mano component, how do you keep your art available at ALL times? My question is purely academic, and not intended to imply that knives are in any way superior to sticks because of their portability. Thanks. Terry had several videos. I'm not sure if they are availabe, but I saw where Cathy did a seminar awhile back. They had several students that attended the Rocky Mountain Martial Arts camp back in the late 80's. I had heard some years back that Terry had cancer, but it was not until this notice that my fears were confirmed. Terry was a credit to the martial arts. His wife and his students are extremely knowledgeable and you should be able to find some of them. Good Luck. You learn the basics using a stick. But stick, empty hand, or knife, the basic counter moves & concepts are the same. Does this mean that you only work say your benchpress once every two weeks? You are in a physical job which may satisfy that requirement but I cant allow that myself stuck behind this desk for the time being. When I worked on the oil rigs I didn't need to press at all as we were doing it as prt of our job. Im working a very basic program at the moment coming out of a knee injury. Every lunch time I go to the gym. Mon, Thurs I bench 8 sets, Tricep dips 6 sets. Then its sit ups and stretch. Tues Fris and its Military press and was leg press but that was causing my knee to hurt again so im starting to try the powerlifters snatch. Wed is rest as is sat and sun. The main empahasis was to slowly build up and see the strength benefits. Mistakes are that you try too much and quickly lose interest of have injuries. I have gone small in order to see the results. Later on I will adapt the workout and include extra body parts but im trying to create a solid base. If I don't do this I go on the cross country runner machine for 15, rower 15 and then bike for 15 using the intervals. Sit up in between. Don't use hands for balance on the machines. <> I came down from my high body fat I tend to carry and restarted my creatine for a blast. Body fat has risen. The stuff puts the beef on no doubt and im controlling my diet. Really annoyed me that. I wont bother with it anymore. < test and came up with age 29. I'd rather be training more and working less, but like everyone, my kids, family, and most of all my wife need me to be a provider rather than the next Inside Kung Fu cover boy. I dont feel too bad about that.>> as a single parent(37) I find the time hard too that's why I am cycling to work three times a week and utilising my lunchtimes. My training schedule gets affected by my soon to be 11 going on 14 year old son requirements. I teach three classes but the third will get the chop in favour of my own training requirements. So its three to four judo classes a week right now. Im getting guys to hold pads for me twice a week but that will be picked up on more this winter. pat ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 11:31:56 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Rick Faye's series of training guides I am informed that the first book in Rick Faye's series of training guides is due in December on Panantukan for more information 612-331-6440.
