I have found that the exact methodology I learned in the Inayan system (particularly Serrada) lends itself to extremely effective defense with the pocket stick. A pocket stick doesn't necessarily havre to be something you are carrying, either...a pen or similar object works well in a pinch. Ben is a senior Guro in the Inayan system, and one of the finest human beings I've had the pleasure to have met, and was fortunate to have studied with. Rose Berry was a kind, gentle lady, who never failed to make me feel as welcome in her home as one of her own family. Rose will be sorely missed by all those who knew her. Please say a prayer for her family...Rose was truly one of a kind. Be at work at 8am...stay there till @5:15(sometimes longer) 1 hour at = lunch. Be at school by 6pm...stay till 10pm(Never any longer...:) While doing the above during the week, I try to get at least a 15 min = workout a day with the Total Gym that my wife got...(It is not a bad piece = of equipment...gets the heart pumping) At work we have two floors...I try to go up the stairs slowly while = keeping my legs bent. By the time I get to the top, I can really feel it. = This probably looks a little dumb so I only do it if no one is around. = =20 After school, I sometime do some FMA training with a school mate that also = takes FMA. I also get my wife to try to hit me with a baston. Since she = is untrained, I believe that this is what it would be like to be attacked = in a real life situation. This might sound weird but I also do empty hand = with my dog. This started out as just playing with her but she became = faster. What I do is tap her on the nose with my fingers and then put my = hands up. This causes her to try to do the same thing which can really = hurt because she has such long claws. I parry or pass the paws out of the = way and tap her on the nose or chest. She really enjoys doing this and it = looks like she is boxing with me. It is also good for getting the heart = going. Right now the only real training I get is on Saturday when I go to Eskrima = class. As soon as school is out, I plan to go three nights a week but = until then this is it. If anyone has any suggestions or comments that can help, please let me = know. =20 Mike Barnes Inayan Eskrima ------------------------------ From: "Mike Barnes" Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 10:42:51 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #449 Last time Jon wrote: Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 08:07:24 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: stabbing > > I'm new to the newsletter. Can anyone tell me more? There was a guy in Stockton, California that killed a homeless person that was apparently trying to aggressively bumm some $$ or a smoke or something. The person being asked to cough up something stabbed the guy several times. It was originally reported that the person doing the stabbing was an Eskrimador, but as it later turned out the individual had very little, if any, actual eskrima training. Or so I recall the details... I have TKD (Tues,Thurs,Fri eve) a Cardio Kickbox workout before TKD(Tues+Thurs) and Eskrima (Mon eve + Sun afternoon) and starting free weights as I noticed without the lifting I am not seeing the results I'd like as far as toning and losing a little.....what I really found to help me in that arena and fits in to my schedule is a workout by Dr. Joyce Vedral, "12 Minute Total Body Workout" (takes me 15 :o) ) only uses 3lb weights, fast results and doesn't take a lot of time. I'd like to ask another general question for some feedback: I have only been training in Eskrima for 2 months, the Hach system, and have just been tested already for Journeyman 3 level. I don't feel I really know it still though, where I don't have to stop and think about what I am doing. 12 angles, 8 angles, passing, pulling, pining, cut the line, circle the line... Is there a set period of time that you test, like a standard.... a certain amount you should know in a set period of time? (hope that makes sense, I'm am still a little ignorant in this area! ) Thanks!! ------------------------------ From: "IESA" Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 09:32:12 -0800 Subject: eskrima: auditions There will be an open audition for all martial artists/stuntpeople on November 7th for the upcoming full-length film, "Scraps", produced and directed by Master Sultan Uddin. People think I'm weird, but if I whip this at an attackers head, I imagine it would do some damage (also, I *never* lose my keys :). Frankly I would never want to take out a knife with the intent to use it - I guess I prefer blunt instruments (my purse with aforementioned keychain plus books, wallets, bits-n-pieces ...a good 5lbs or more, strap for choking... ;). I'm not as "environmentally aware" about possible weapons, although since joining the list I have been training myself to think more along these lines. My Sifu demonstrated uses for a credit card/bank card as a "defensive edge". I feel pretty confident about finding weapons in my store and at my house; now I'm thinking in terms of walking down the street etc. My legs for running will always be my preferred choice, of course. 0.02c for the day, jocelyne ooh ooh I just remembered, bodhran beaters make excellent pocket sticks, and in a heavily Irish influenced society, nobody thinks twice about them..."yeah, I'm with the band..." :) Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: "Joshua Hutchinson" Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 10:42:49 PDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Creatine Jill, Creatine can be used for weight gain, but most of the gain is from water retention. It does help give you that extra "boost," but then again so does a little ginseng (heating) or coffee. Not to say it doesn't work, though... Last year, during my strength training cycle (3 mos.), I gained 32 lbs. of muscle (from 155 to 187)- I was working out like a mad man, though. Recently, through eating copious amounts of fry bread and frito pies (crunched up fritos for the pie crust, chili con carne, chopped onions and jalapenos, topped with cheese) I've managed to gain 5 lbs. of spare tire. If you want to try creatine, just make sure that it is bonded with pyruvate and NOT monohydrate. Monohydrate is bad for the enamel on your teeth, as well as your liver. Pyruvate is easily processed by your liver and has no ill effects on your pearly whites. I hope that helps! Mabuhay ang Eskrima!!!
