Salamat - Pat ------------------------------ From: tcsno Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 15:19:26 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Terry Tippie Insane Training! You are massively overtraining. First, deal with the food. Feed the lean mass with lean protein. Whey, foul, fish, wild game. Then go with veggies and low glycemic fruits for carbs. This is relative to the measurement of your lean body mass. Then you can add mono-fats according to your activity. That is olives, avacado, almonds, macadamians, etc. This will give caloric ballast. Pick one art per day, separate skill from strength. You can do one or two short weight sessions per week. Multiply reps times weight divided by total time. See if you can increase this every workout. When you cant, take more time between weight sessions. 7- 10 days may be appropriate. Keep one hi intensity aerobic equipment session. Measure intensity, duration, and take off time when you do not improve. The other aerobic day should be chasing your dogs for fun. I am surprised you are trying to keep up this pace. Do less, and you will see more improvement. To recover, try a balanced snack,(one half BALANCE BAR) before and after your workout. Also try your biggest meal after that morning workout. Another key to fat loss,.......drink a minimum of 1.5 gallons of ice cold water per day, every day. This will facilitate heat loss through urination, and keep you well hydrated. Sleep 8 hours per nite, with maybe a nap. You should obviously be taking anti-oxidants and adding some glutamine after workouts(like 20 grams). Your diet can include green tea, and wine for the added polyphenols. If you need more advice, email me. I dont charge a thing,........yet. It's a folder with a curved 2 7/8" blade with nasty-looking serrations. In the computer biz, I really can't clip the blade to my pocket. I have to trade accessibility for concealment. If anyone asks me about the clip on my wallet, I explain that it's a money clip. Anyone that guesses it's a knife hears my "gentleman's accessory" story. Some curious friends have seen the blade and ask why I would carry such a thing. My over-socialized reply is to hide the purpose in a joke. "This knife is specifically designed to be .... a money clip." ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 12:59:39 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: eskrima: Re: carrying knives/weapons > 2 7/8" blade with nasty-looking serrations. The rest of the time I'm either at work, commuting to work, working on my basement or meeting family obligations. Oh, I forgot ... I slip some sleep time in there too ;o) I do try to slip in a little footwork, or stick work, etc whenever I have a few minutes. On the brighter side, once my basement is done I'll have a place to put up a heavy bag, tire dummy, etc so I can work out ... and I SHOULD have more time to train ... unless I end up going back to school for my masters' ;o) I'm also going to get either a ski-machine or elliptical machine. I have a bad knee so running, skipping rope, biking, aerobics & stair-machines are all no-no's. I see someone training with three pound weights?? Unless your are trying to develop straight blast endurance in your delts.....use HEAVY WEIGHTS. This is relative to your body, but the muscle works on the all or none law,...fibers contract,..or they dont. The are not fired by range or form, or style,...only by how much you lift. This type of training will take you farther than three pound weights and TAE BO. I've been learning FMA/JKD for almost 2 years now, and although I know some things really well and they flow (ooooh I love that doing-not doing feeling), others I have to think about and then I wonder if I'll ever get it... In our school our Sifu does "test" us regularly, ie check our progress, see where we're at, but we don't have ranks/belts (which I really like). Actually we do sort of have them, but not really - the attitude is, you're always learning, and there will always be someone ahead and someone behind you, and the idea is to improve yourself, not compete with that guy who's black belt, and you're only green etc etc. I don't even know what the levels are in FMA, other than at a certain point your Guro or the head of your system or whoever will test you for instructor/Guro, I guess. I say respect your elders and learn from them, and be nice to your juniors and help them, and that's good enough. The important thing is to keep learning - - not just in class, but going home and reading up, talking to others about what you & they learn, and working out your own solutions/style. (gosh gee whiz i sound corny but i mean it....:) I'd be interested in knowing about other people's level systems also. cheers, jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: David Fulton Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 16:04:18 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Daily Carry Weapons Currently, I carry a Spyderco Endura, but I'm working on getting to where I'll feel more comfortable relying on my empty hands or a pocket stick, and I'm always checking out objects on hand for potential as improvised weapons. I figure I'll get a good rattan or hardwood cane eventually. Friends and medical records would certainly attest that I have a bad knee, so it shouldn't be hard to justify my having a cane should I end up using it on someone. Of course, I'd have to get comfortable with the idea of using a cane (for walking) first. On the other hand, there are already days when my knee acts up and I wish I had one :o( Respectfully, Dave Fulton dfulton@computerpackages.com Full Contact Martial Arts Association "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another." ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 14:59:36 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #451 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
