Right now my left index finger >is the size of a hotdog... > > I have also used dit da jow from different sources and the contents can vary widely depending upon the source, purpose and application of the jow. Basically, there are two types of jow regarding purposes: restorative and transformative. Without going into great detail (in part because my knowledge is limited), a restorative jow (the most common) is used after the fact to speed healing to a traumatized area. Transformative jow is used prior to conditioning exercises like Iron Palm and Iron Vest. The transformative jow has two purposes: short term is to help prevent trauma during the exercises that follow and long term is to affect changes to that part of the body that are supposed to make is less susceptible to trauma in general. Some recipes are for external use only, some are said to be consumable, and others are consumable "in small quantities". I can personally attest to the effectiveness of the restorative and transformative jows that I've used. Note: I wasn't exposed to transformative jows long enough to attest to their effectiveness at the long term goal I mentioned, nor have I ever consumed any jow. A trick, that I learned from my karate sensei, to prevent swollen fingers from an impact, is to squeeze the hell out of it immediately after the impact. Just grip the finger the way you would a stick and squeeze as hard as you can for 30 seconds then release it. For best results, do this a couple of times and then soak it in a restorative jow if available. This seems to prevent a lot of the swelling, bruising and tenderness. HTH. Same basic rules as the Dog Brother gatherings. With the only differances being Catogories we can play with: Stick 1----->We can close all the way in but no takedowns or sweeps. Stick 2------>We can close all the way into close quater and do takedowns and sweeps but the fight stops when someone goes down. Stick 3--------->We can close ---- grapple, take downs, groundfighting. Same as at the gatherings. This may allow for a progressive intro to "reality" for those that are too intimidated to give it a try. We can experiment with any of the above if you wish. There is a park nearby that we could meet at. This is not a call going out in a challange match kind of attitude.or to play top of the Mountain. I know there are some differant styles in Tennessee.---Pikiti Tersia,Anayan,Modern Arnis,Inosanto Blend ect.Lets not get into any kind of political ego thing. This is a honest attempt to get a group of like-minded fellows together and grow. Its a long way to the west coast from here guys.So it would be nice to start some form of stickfighting brotherhood here in this neck of the woods that offers at least something close in the same learning experiance mode. Finding people to play with is a hard thing.Having students to train with in this manner is a good thing but this kind of playing offers a whole other level of learning because there is a differant chemistry. Top Dog,Crafty, Thanks for leading the way Note: Due to business I must leave town until Jan. (I'll be training though, hee hee!!) This post will give people who are interested time to mull it over and think about it. I'll post this same letter when i get back in town around Jan. 1st. Im leaving this Sat.so I wont be able to answer any questions unless you e-mail befor then. bladewerks@aol.com Barry Meadows Seveirville Tennesse. ------------------------------ From: tweeder199@aol.com Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 12:15:56 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Training Thanks Alain, i myself failed to mention the point of view that you gave, sorry bout that! another thing that needs to be said is that training under a sort of 'dynamic strength' works wonders.... ie : pushing a boulder away from you, even though there is nothing there... its mostly psychological and all, you guys know what i mean! ps. The brief version of my routine goes something like: Cardio/conditioning: running, heavy bag work, diamonds and triangles footwork. I like to use speed and intensity intervals a lot. Weights: real basic (squats, DL, bent-over row, shoulder press) + powerlifting (power cleans, hanging snatch, etc.) + grip work (check out John Brookfield's "Mastery of Hand Strength") Heavy bag plyometrics, rhythm and speed plyos. The ever-popular sticks made from steel rebar, and two one inch iron pipes, plus a 2 inch iron pipe (about 3 ft long) for Dos Manos. Two other books I'd recommend are "Beyond Crunches" by Pavel Tsatsouline and "Fit to Fight" by Peter Consterdine Regards, Scott =A0=A0 - -------------------------------------------------- Scott Kinney Project Manager sakinney@ix.netcom.com - -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: "Bryan Justus" Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 09:36:04 PDT Subject: eskrima: Info on FMA-Indonesian book Does anyone on the list remember the name of a soft cover book, (It was the size of a magazine), The name was something in regards to Indonesian Arts - . For anyone interested, I get a "non commercial" family made Jow from a small herb shop in Oregon (of all places). They will do mail order and (hoping our moderator doesn't mind) their phone number is (541) 479-3602. The price is about 13 US dollars for about 8 oz. it is about 20 times more potent than something like Five Photos Brand. This shop will also soon be carrying Balur Cimande, an oil used by Pencak Silat players for the healing of bruises and strengthening of bones.I have no idea what the price will be for this yet. For your finger you will get some results by applying your jow and then rubbing in (very gently) some good coconut oil. The oil will help the jow penetrate and is cooling.
