Size, Strength, and Conditioning DO MATTER. >> Not exactly a ringing endorsement for the martial arts is it. Who where they fighting? If you haven't figured this already (unlikely), I have a real problem with this. Perhaps I'm just wet behind the ears, but my understanding and observations of the FMA and IMA (I'm talking about kali and pencak-silat for the most part here) suggest that a central tenet of both is that superior strength and conditioning can be negated by intelegence and skill. An example you may relate to is the destruction of an incoming fist by the point of the defenders elbow. This is one of the most basic techniques of both silat and kali. How much strength is required to do it successfully? Almost none! How much conditioning does it require? Almost none! How much skill does it require? Plenty! How much dammage does the incoming fist experience? The more strength behind the punch, the greater the dammage. Some seem so eager to forget that both silat and kali are edged weapons based fighting arts. Every technique was developed for use with edged weapons and to defend from edged weapons. In edged weapons combat the only thing that's gonna save your butt is your skill. If some guy attacks you with a knife no amount of physical strength is gonna keep that blade from making contact. Skill is the only thing that will save you. ------------------------------ From: BENRBRAUN@aol.com Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 19:19:19 EDT Subject: eskrima: Web Page of Interest Interesting web site with interesting new news about Pekiti Tirsia: www.pencaksilat.org ------------------------------ From: " Bad Karma " Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 15:34:53 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #453 >From: tcsno >Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 09:34:16 -0400 >Subject: eskrima: 3 pound weights again > >Sorry to burst the bubble of some. (Though the running in place is only done when I can't actually run or get to some type of cardio equipment. Like when I'm out of town in a hotel with nothing better to do.) I'll usually have a personal stereo on, with an alpha brainwave tape playing to zone me out. Some people may find this extremely boring but it saves on meditation time in terms of having a "one minded" focus. The punches and kicks are never usually done all at once, everything is broken up as time allows, (Jabs, phone call, hook, meeting, uppercuts, phone, etc.) and since they're not part of the power routine, they are target oriented. (hanging paper ball.) I don't complete everything everyday, usually 2-3 circuits broken up during the week. >It is the moderate weights with reps in the 6-12 range that do the most for size. Very true, also diet also has alot to do with how much size you put on. I can be on the same routine and just by adjusting my calorie intake with emphasis on protein and a little more carbs and I will put on muscle size. (Though I do lower reps, I increase weight when I can do six reps, which means I'm usually in the 3-5 range) I prefer not to do this though, as I find my striking suffers (with a stick or empty hand.) and my endurance drops with the added size. (Muscle not fat, fat just compounds the problem.) This is my individual physiology though, so people will have to experiment. On the other hand, there are some guys who are just brutes. A late boxing instructor of mine (Burt Poe) was probably one of the most powerful men I had ever met, yet he probably never weighed over 175 lbs. His hands were like vises, Randy White outweighed him by 70-80 lbs and couldn't turn his wrist in wrist wrestling. The Cowboys conditioning coaches said his muscles reacted more like monkey muscle than human muscle, kinda scary.
