Can > someone please shoot it to me. Private e-mail is fine A somewhat interesting story... GM Cacoy usually spends the winters in his home, Cebu City. Now realize that Cebu City is a fairly large place. It was Christmas time a few years back and I wanted to send Cacoy a Christmas card. I had his business card, but it didn't have a RP snailmail addr on it. So I addressed the card as: Cacoy Canete Doce Pares Cebu City, Cebu RP and he received it!!! I posted last night about getting whanged across the backs of my fingers. At the time of post, my finger was turning purple and swelling and throbbing (to be clear, I mean my FINGER... index finger left hand.) Needless to say it hurt like a bitch. I rubbed some jow on it right after it happened, then right before I went to bed. 25 hours later it's fine. A little stiff, a little discolored. But similar injuries that weren't as bad, that I didn't jow, lasted for a week. Great stuff but I'm not willing to trade for possible liver or cancer toxicity. What the hell is in it, and why isn't it used in western medicine? As I said before it's 5 Photos brand. also thanks for the leads on practice partners... ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 23:37:34 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Rank? Why issue rank? As people have already said, many students need a goal to shoot for to measure their progress. As long as an instructor maintains consistent standards for each rank I don't see a problem with this. I have been teaching Pekiti-Tirsia for almost 20 years. In all that time I have had only had two students reach Guro rank under me (one of whom went on to Mataas na Guro. More on him in a separate post). I believe a good instructor certifies those who have passed a course of instruction under him for the same reasons a medical school issues a diploma. One reason is to allow future patients (or in our case students) to distinguish those who have passed the course from those who haven't. I would guess that many of the same people who say that "only skill matters" still go to a doctor that has a degree from a medical school on his wall. If they have a specific ailment they go to a doctor certified as a "specialist" and if they are really hurting, they may check to see if the specialist is "board certified". We've all seen cases were a guy claims to have studied under a famous instructor, but doesn't have the paperwork to back it up. "But can he fight?" many will ask. A fare question but one that is useful only to those who already can fight and therefore are in a good position to judge the ability of others. On average, most people seeking martial arts instruction are going to be impressed by anyone who seems more skilled then they are. There's a saying, "To an infant all adults look tall." Therefore, how does a beginner with no fighting skills choose an instructor? The same way the majority of us, with no medical training choose a doctor. If you just have a cold that's one thing. If you have cancer, you want the best cancer specialist you can find with the best credentials. "Well he said he went to Harvard and he knows more about cancer than I do" won't seem adequate when your life is on the line. The "if he can he beat me in fight, I'll study under him" argument only goes so far. Most professional boxers can beat the living snot out of the men who train them. But they still train with them. Who is the better boxing coach, Mike Tyson, Mohammad Ali or Angelo Dundee, the man who trained them both and knew enough to train them differently? A separate problem with rank is when people engage in hero worship of their instructor, either through their teacher's design or their own immaturity and begin to confuse "good at a specific martial art" with "good at everything and wise in all things." "My teacher is higher ranked than your teacher!" is the martial arts equivalent of "My daddy can beat up your daddy." to which the standard school yard reply was "well your daddy ain't here now." right before the first punch was thrown. I see rank as a communication tool. No different then the different grades in grammar school, high school or college. When it comes time to choose a college, you choose one based on the record of it's graduates. The "diploma mills" out there wind up with a bad rep because of the quality of their students. The "Harvards" will end up with a good rep for the same reason. The problem is not with diplomas but with diploma mills. Perhaps I'm just wet behind the ears, but my understanding and observations of the FMA and IMA (I'm talking about kali and pencak-silat for the most part here) suggest that a central tenet of both is that superior strength and conditioning can be negated by intelegence and skill. >> What if one has all the attributes mentioned? ..best to increase all of 'em. No one art guarantee's a perfect self defense. Anyone who makes such claims is full of it up to their eye balls. One can gain from Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ, Catch ...whatever offers functionality and high probability. And for those who do from time to time chime in on "anti grappling" etc, no realistic person probably cares to roll around on the pavement, in a club ..or just about any public place but hey one can end up in that situation and you're better off for knowing how to deal with it. Simple as that.
