In ANY sort of conflict, whether a controlled sporting match, a nasty exchange behind a bar, or in a meeting with hostile co-workers; whoever dictates the engangement wins. While Guru Rennie is senior instructor in our Perguruan, and while our schools love to participate in IPSI sponsored events and do so whenever possible, neither he nor any other of our instructors are representatives of IPSI, official or otherwise. We do however support them as an organization that does much good work to promote the arts of Silat worldwide. (They also put on some of the most fun and educational tournaments in the world IMHO). However, while several of us have been acused of being a little crazed, none of us are nuts enough to want to get involved in the politics of the Silat organizations here in the US. I am reminded of the words of the great curmudgeon HL Mencken: "The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule." (I note that Carl is not looking to rule here ;-}) In many states in the US we are now seeing efforts to regulate martial arts. These are, in my opinion, a solution in search of a problem, usually led by those who would rule in order to rule out the competition. Is the suggestion here that the government do it??? If so, do we really want the people who run the post office and the Pentagon, the Welfare Department, the garbage department, building permit department, parking enforcement, etc etc deciding anything at all about martial arts??? As Senator Daniel Moynihan once said in a lucid moment "The single most exciting thing you encounter in government is competence, because it is so rare." If not a matter for government, then from a legal point of view, what is the difference between Ford and Chevy having a pissing contest and MA instructors? Shimmying up to the urinal together (now there's an appealing image!) is called anti-competitive behavior and is a violation of the Sherman Act (anti-trust law) and others-- and properly so! Absent special circumstances (e.g. medicine) in a free society people are responsible for themselves and the choices they make. O'Rourke ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1999 10:31:46 -0000 Subject: eskrima: size, strength and skill From: BENRBRAUN@aol.com <> I worked on the doors of nightclubs and pubs for over ten years and never got to pull this one off. Not saying its not functional and I did use the elbow into the chest but the reality of close quarters is that the neat stuff usually gets messed up. Gunting the bicep to a guy wearing a leather jacket who is intent in taking your head off isnt quite the same as someone wearing a tee shirt in a class. That is reality I'm afraid. I have had guys crying from a powerful kick only to see them get up and fight again 30 secs later when the alcohol and adrenaline kicked out their pain. Ok I get the pleasure in knowing that they will not walk well for two weeks but at that moment I need them to stay down! <> I only ever had two knives pulled on me on ten years on the door but have faced knives or baseball bats in other circumstances. First thing to learn. Its not like the gym. The baseball bat was swung at my head while I was at home from work with flu. I caught people breaking into a neighbours house and had to face a guy with a bat on a thick wet grass bank. Try breaking in on that. I have also in the time of my former career had to fight while rolling down stairs against a vicious customer that head only just scarred someone for life with a pint glass. Thankfully I was stronger and able to over power him in general wrestling in a very confined space. So most of my fighting skills used have been related to non blade situations and nearly all of them have been fought in confined or extremely difficult envioronments. Things are never equal. The time when you need to defend yourself is never going to be at your advantage so you must look at every angle to make sure that you live to walk away. Of course skill is going to save you but that skill is enhanced if you can crush the blighter with one hand. pat ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1999 07:38:22 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #462 **************************************** To unsubscribe from this digest, eskrima-digest, send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
