I was honored that you guys consider me the way you said. The gathering in Sante Fe sounds like it will have some of the best stick fighters in a very well rounded event. Unfortunately I must report to you that this last October 18th I was admited to Union Hospital here suffering from Phnemonia in my left lung. I got sick and kept training and teaching hard thinking it would go away. Well Friday night I woke up and could not breath, an ambulance came and got me, ect. ect. I was released Sunday Oct. 20th but have been unable to do anything since then. Just bed rest and healing until the Phnemonia and Bronchitis leaves. NOW, as some people call out sick on events like this I wanted to make it perfectly clear that this is in no way my intention or desire. I sincerely wanted to come this special gethering in Sante Fe, so as there is no misunderstanding I wanted to make this post and furthermore invite any or all of your fighters to come to our WKC (World Kombat Championships) in Newark DE, this April the 29th. We fight prettty much the same way you guys do, except we duct tape the head gear on the head so that it stays on when you go to the ground and you can keep hitting the head with the stick non-stop. Once again please let say Eric and Arlan that I am very mad that I cannot attend, but just comming off the Phnemonia I cannot compete in anything. I also have a Vale Tudo fight comming up that I have to cancel. By the way just for the record in the 1999 WKC (World Kombat Championships) Michael Blake won the Solo Baston Division and took 2nd in the DUMPAG division, striking and grappling. He faught very well and I also found him to be a pretty nice guy. Eric and Arlan I hope you guys will join us on Sat. April 29th, and by the way how about having a gathering out here on the East Coast once or twice. A traditional staple in many, perhaps most, FMA systems is testing to go all out in a carenza for as long as one can. When Top Dog was training with GT Gaje this was called "doing burn outs" and it remains an important part of his training repertoire. In a related vein, concerning the recent thread on size and strength: As some of you may remember, Royce Gracie stopped competing in the UFC because he felt that time limits took away from the smaller man the time necessary to wear down the larger man. Several of the most famous fights in BJJ history took hours, yet as we see in the British spec ops training criteria mentioned above, it is more likely that under two minutes is all one will have to settle it. In such a situation size and strength really help. Of course, one has to be aerobically fit enough to get to the fight still ready to rumble. And of course a big strong man lacking the awareness of the basic issues and basic aerobic/anaerobic fitness can be put away in short order, and of course, the more weapons are in play the less size and strength matter. Indeed, one might even argue that the probable speed advantage of a small man over a big man gives him the advantage in a knife fight. In the last Gathering we saw a man give away 75lbs in a staff fight and kick ass, and certainly in my staff fights with C-Island Dog Dale Franks, I did not feel that my greater size gave me a big advantage. As the weapons get smaller/less deadly, (e.g. sticks) then size can matter more. But in empty hand a big strong angry f&!ker (or wa#*er as they say in the UK) can be a handful. Not saying it can't be done, but , , , , This has been on my mind as I approach this weekend's festivities in Santa Fe. Although the Salty Dog is a mere 20-25 pounds bigger than me and a mere 5 years younger ;-) he is A LOT stronger. In our fights over the years I can think of one occasion where I survived a one armed choke only because time was called (San Diego-- in the DB vids we showed me knocking the stick out of his hand but not the follow up of him throwing me to the ground, mounting and twisting my head off until time was called), and another one armed choke which I survived only because I was able to reverse to top due to his then (1994) minimal BJJ-- but since then he has gone on to gold medal as a blue at the Pan Am games. Case in point: Some 12 years ago, Poz, a former collegiate wrestler of some note, met and rolled with Rickson Gracie and it took Rickson 42 minutes to submit him. He went on to become a student to the Gracies and then the Machados and this past year got his black from the Machados). My name is Lars and i have been doing JKD for about 8 months or so. Next I have a question. I go to a small school in north Minnesota that has just recently started. We have just started to do full speed sparring and want to make our own training/soft sticks. My teacher has been experimenting with PVC pipe, foam, and duct tape, but after we did some grappling with these sticks, they were bent and broken. Does anyone have any ideas that might work or have worked for them in the past? At 5 days, 10 hours a day, well worth the $$. (LFI-1 is essentially the course above plus firearms training, etc) Hoping to get to LFI-3 in '00.
