If someone attacks me or robs me at knife point or gunpoint, I don't give a rat's a$$ about why he's doing it. I feel compassion for others, but only as long as they don't step over another person's rights. Having a negative upbringing or bad social experience is no excuse for violating anyone else's rights or property. At the same time, the prime motive should always be to protect yourself and your loved ones. If you have accomplished this, and the assailant leaves, fine, let him/her go. But if they persist, you should be able to do whatever is necessary to insure your safety and wellbeing. So self defense is above the station of everyday people? In the "Samurai Bible" it is said that the gentleman warrior should "consider death" in all undertakings (no pun intended). Unless we train only to score points in tournaments, we must consider the possibility that we may have to operate in the extreme if/when our lives or the lives of those dear to us are in imminent danger of being lost to some miscreant's perverse/criminal intentions. When my daughter lets me know that she and some guy want to get married he's going to have to convince me that he will do whatever it takes to defend her and/or any children they may have ... otherwise I'm going to do my best (by any means necessary:-) to convince him to find another co-victim and leave my baby alone! He will need more than flame proof shorts to ward off the heat that I'd bring to bear on him :-) My father-in-law and I didn't get off to a good start (he likes taverns, I don't :-) but what convinced him most that I was "OK" was that after we tussled in the kitchen one day (Hoo-whee!) he was convinced that I would do what it takes if the need ever arose. After our little wrestle we were "good buddies." He's a WWII vet ... I have to chuckle considering how he'd probably respond to the above stuff. He didn't care much for "martial arts" (showed me a couple of things he could do to someone with a trench tool :-) Doesn't matter what system we study, if we're not prepared to use it to whatever level is necessary we may be keeping fit but are otherwise wasting time and "de Debbils" will win hands-down. Murderers decide who lives/dies all the time. So a good guy considering "gravest extreme" responses to a would be murderer is outta line? Is that politically incorrect or something? Sheesh!!! ------------------------------ From: "Jon Howard" Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 15:13:28 -0000 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #473 Todd said a lot of stuff... re Mr Christian Which is more in the vein of what I was trying to get across (only better said) and I would like to be the first to applude his argument. Nobody, not you or me has any right per se to say who ought and who ought not suruve in the gene pool, nobody can say what contribution anyone may or maynot make at any time in their life. God given life is a precious thing regardless of who carries the torch. Maybe we should change the subject before we delve into the can of worms that is vigiliante justice... BTW - I wasn't taking a backhanded swipe at Christianity - I was trying to use a little humour to make light of what I still percive to be a frightening train of thought. My apologies to anyone who took offense. I have been looking for it for years....until now. And if I may point out a very small failure: Page 12 is missing.;-) But nevertheless, thank you very much again. In the middle of all this I realized I somehow have gotten shanghaied into doing charity work. Hanging out with these guys has been a bad influence on me!!! I feel like Huckleberry Finn who had to go hide behind the barn and swear for twenty minutes just to get the taste back into his mouth For those of you in Colorado ******************************************** Extend Your Hand in Peace and Healing Benefit Martial Arts Seminar for Hale Hilsabeck Respected long-time Colorado martial arts instructor Hale Hilsabeck, owner of Rocky Mountain Karate and member of the Colorado Karate Association, was recently severely injured in a traffic accident. And now, the medical bills are rising. A daylong benefit seminar is planned in Parker. Three of the top instructors in the nation will be donating their time and expertise to this benefit to ensure that each participant's charitable contribution is well rewarded. These instructors - each from radically different styles - are asking students and instructors of all styles and callings to come to the aid of this fine man: Guru Bob Orlando, author of two books, video producer and owner-operator of Je du-too School of Martial Arts will be instructing in his specialty, the devastating art of Chinese kuntao. This style mixes the best of Chinese and Indonesian fighting styles into a lethal combination. Orlando's teaching mastery will make the class a must for any martial artist who wishes to expand his or her horizons. Shihan Bob Davis, owner and head instructor of Omega Karate, will highlight the deadly art of Yudo/Jujitsu. This Korean combat judo takes grappling to a new level in applications that range from disabling to deadly. Grapplers, as well as those martial artists seeking new knowledge or some cross-training, will benefit from this session. Marc "Animal" MacYoung, ex-street fighter, bouncer, bounty hunter and bodyguard, MacYoung is also the author of 11 books, producer of nine self-defense videos and an internationally acclaimed expert on knife work. He will be teaching street knife self-defense. MacYoung's teaching, as always, will be marked by his wacky brand of humor that helps offset the deadly seriousness of the topic. The day lets participants work with three of the top instructors in the nation and also gives them the opportunity to help a fellow martial artist in need. The seminar is set for Omega Karate, Parker, on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission will be $40. All proceeds go to the Hale Hilsabeck Fund. The karate school, 17864 Cottonwood Drive, can be found off Parker Road (Highway 83), just north of C-470 in Cottonwood Plaza, Parker, Colorado. For more information, call (303) 590-6075 between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or visit http://www.orlandokuntao.com/links_and_events.html or http://members.xoom.com/DYoung654/calendar.html or http://www.diac.com/~dgordon/schedule.html or http://members.xoom.com/omegatkd on the Web.
