Regards, Tuhon Bill McGrath ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 20:07:25 -0800 Subject: eskrima: "To MPEG or not to MPEG" I am experimenting with adding a series of monthly MPEG video files to the PTI web site. I would like the opinion of list members if this would be better tool for viewing techniques over the web than a series of still photos. The files I'll be using are 2 megs in size and contain about 60 seconds of low res video (and surprisingly good sound). It is clear in a 2' X 2' frame, but gets fuzzy when expanded to 4" X 4". I could use up the 2 megs with high res video that would look good at 4" X 4" but you would only get 15 seconds for your 2 megs of download. It took me about 10 minutes to download the 2 meg experimental file off the PTI site at 40,000 bps. Is this too long a download time or too large a file size for most systems? How much hassle are you willing to go through to view a short video of a technique over the internet? When the Pekiti-Tirsia site first opened, I was told the technology for live stream video was not up to speed to make it practical. Has live stream improved sufficiently that it would solve the large file size/long download problem of MPEG? On the other hand, as Snow and Stanton (?) showed in >Handgun Stopping Power a significant amount of the effect getting hit by a >bullet has is based on what the person "thinks" will happen when he is shot. Just to embellish a little. This is partially correct, but the other part of the equation is the amount of tissue damage inflicted by the bullet or bullets when they hit. That's why soft point rounds are much more effective than say, a full metal jacketed round. The soft point expands causing maximum trauma to the surrounding tissue causing shock and subsequent death. A FMJ round could well go right through an attacker doing minimum damage and not put him down. The effect of the FMJ would be similar to a clean puncture with a blade. The individual may hemorrhage to death eventually but it would take time. In the mean time you could be facing one PO'd individual. I agree that severing a supporting tendon or ligament or one of the flexors or extensors on any of the limbs would be a superior strategy than going for a center mass stab. A slash also would have a good chance, especially if done on the inside of the wrist, of severing the radial or ulnar arteries (or both ) that supply the hand with blood. If you have an individual full of adrenaline and pumping with a heart rate of 200 beats per minute or better and an open artery he's going to run out of gas pretty quick. Greetings to everyone. I just wish to add one more comment before I go back into lurking hibernation (it's much quieter back there). A lot of people have spoken recently regarding self-defence and the use of tools, guns, knives, sticks whatever. I would like to suggest that the majority of people (NOTE : Read the majority, NOT all, there are some exceptions - most notably Animal) forget to use the biggest, best and most dangerous tool in their arsenal - The law... It may be an ass, you may not agree with it, but it's just one of those things you'r just gonna have to accept. It truely is a double edged sword - when used properly it can be your best friend, when not it can be your worst nightmare. To be competant with any tool requires practice and this is no exception - I would say that it is EVERY PERSONS responsibility (that includes students as well as teachers) to research and beware of all their local penal codes regarding the use of violence and force - not just at the Mas Ayoob class on lethal force level, but at all levels... We should all be aware of the consequences of our actions and this is never more true than in the area of self defence. There appears to be a consistant global attitude that pertains to the use of "reasonable force" - the definition of which changes from day to day, person to person and more importantly situation to situation. Indulge me while I give a few examples... 1) A couple of years back I took an home office approved course in door security given by a reputable security company. The guy giving the course related the story of a "bouncer" who beat up one of the clubs punters for some reason and when questioned by the Police said "He was asking for it, so I gave it to him!" - this guy went to prison. WRONG RESPONSE! 2) If for arguments sake I happended to fall out with someone over a petty issue and that person then "challenged me" to a fight, what would be the correct response - should I "prove my manhood" by engaging him in personal combat, or would a better response be to seek the assistance of my local constabulary, inform them of the circumstances and have them present when the guy shows up so they can cart him off for incitement or assult. The other guy looses his liberty and I go home to the wife and kids. CORRECT RESPONSE! 3) If I come back from shopping to find three guys sitting on the bonnet (hood) of my car, saying that they were "looking after it for me" and demanding I should give them "some money". Most likely I will refuse and politely ask them to leave me and my car alone, even more likely they will not and a situtation will rapidly develop. Having FIRST asked them to leave and THEN proceeding to defend myself using REASONABLE force enough to secure my escape - what then is my next course of action. a) Do I run the guy(s) over with the car so that he (they) can't try and mug anyone ever again. b) Do I do the berkley stomp or some other method of venting my aggression - just to teach the guy a lesson. c) Do I proceed immediately to the nearest Police station to report the incident (BEFORE the three guys do and I find myself being portrayed as the agressor anyway) Answers on a postcard please 8-) Everyone must make their own choices, we all have the free will to do whatever we feel is neccessary in any given situation at any given time and ultimately we will only ever have to wrestle with our own conscience but remember - IF YOU CANNOT REASONABLY JUSTIFY YOUR ACTIONS YOU WILL GOTO JAIL !!!!!! You can fill in all the cliches you like about, weaponless warriors, the highest level of combat and the art of fighting without fighting. Face it guys we are about to live in the 21st century, the rules have changed but in a lot of cases our thinking hasn't...
