I doubt if anything more will be said as it might prejudice his right to a fair trial. When the trial comes up I will inform you of the details. My best wishes go to you and yours over this season. I have a dilemma I need to find someone that can privately train with me once a week for 4 weeks wile I am in Sydney Australia. I will be there for 4 weeks on a work related trip. Here's the deal though the person needs to be able to first off train with someone that has some physical handicaps. there are something's I cant do because I broke my back as a child, so I have to be handled differently then the average student, Also I am a Women, though what difference that would make I don't not know but my sensei claims it dose, shrug The person needs to know the following as its what I have been training in. 3 different styles of arnis all 4 ranges , Remy Presas, Dan Inosanto, and Burton Richardson I am also learning some JKD that is within my physical realm dependent on my disabilities. I will be in Sydney from January 19th to February 20th and I would like to be able to have someone to train with there and have this all sorted and set up before I travel there. Please if anyone knows of anyone that can train with me over the 4 weeks that I am there I need names and phone numbers if they have email address that would be even better to start with as I don't have to call long distance from the east coast to there. Thank you very much J bows deeply to you all Happy Holidays ------------------------------ From: Reisya@aol.com Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 12:57:35 EST Subject: eskrima: Serrada Seminar Master JC Cabiero just finished a Seminar here in South Florida. Grand Master Jhoon Rhee was there and requestd a private Demo. He liked what he saw and was very excited about Master JC's new approach to spreading his teacher's, Angel's, art. JC is now ready to teach the combat blocks of serrada as a completely new approach to the basics. It is not new in that he made them up. This is Angel's stuff. He is simply intriducing it earlier in the training: Basic strikes, one basic block to each strike, combat strikes and one basic combat block for each strike, then you start over and learn the secound block all the up then the third. He was doing a seminar in Germany when he was asked about combat situations often. So he decided to show them a little earlier in the train to keep interest in the beginers and let them know exactly where their training can go. It is very exciting to see, he will be back in March to do a demo at a Kicks USA tournement and then again in May or June to do another seminar. I can't wait. All of a sudden about 95 % >of what they knew just went out the window. Just getting around to reading old digest issues so this response is pretty late. When I first started handling Bastard swords, and I believe Clyde is a Bastard, (I won't make any jokes about how he takes after his owner since his owner might take after me) my only experience with swords was some forms my Kung Fu teacher had me do a few years before. I didn't do very well. The next time I handled a Bastard, I was simultaneously taking lessons in both Kali and fencing. Hence I have some opinions on the statements above. I agree that the Kali stuff that is designed exclusively for sticks can't be used with these sorts of long heavy weapons. Similarly some of the fancier western fencing stuff really isn't terribly useful for these weapons either. But let's look at what was, and is, useful. The Kali footwork that I got from Burton Richardson worked very well. Burt also spent a lot of time emphasizing body mechanics, especially putting your hips into the swing to get the maximum amount of power. This proved invaluable. The blocks, deflections, and parries were also quite useful. I would say that I was able to use a hell of a lot more than 5% of what I'd learned but then, I was really only learning the basics at that time. The fencing lessons proved very valuable for providing much more concentration on the point than we normally get from Kali. Simple techniques like stop thrusts and degages were things that worked for me that were covered better by fencing than Kali training. During most fights I'd use Kali footwork almost exclusively. However, I found that when I fought on the roof beam of our Constabulary, (it was about 2 feet wide, 20 feet long, and 20 feet high), I needed to use the linear fencing footwork so I wouldn't fall off. > Also the requirements of hitting with the >edge also make major differences as do parrying with the edge Yeah I know, >big debate here...my stand from having a psycho try to regularly split my >head with a sword and having the less than fun experience of my sword >snapping because I parried flat Have to agree with you here. I once saw a big guy name Royce go into shock when some short hairy psycho snapped his blade clean off. Royce had made the mistake of blocking with something other than his edge. Oh I know you're supposed to deflect and not block, but shit happens. With the crew I worked with, blocking was needed. Block with the edge and your sword gets nicked. Block with the flat and it gets broke. I know my preference. >At my wedding we had two scientist/swordfighters who sat there and for an >hour discussed the physics of sword strikes. I'm sure it was a fascinating conversation. >I keep on >hearing people say that if you know sticks they apply to all weapons...take >the test folks. Yeah that's a pet peeve of mine. Every weapon is different. It's important to find the commonalities and use them. But you should also be very aware of the differences. Using an epee the same way you use a machete will make the epee useless. When comparing weapons, the differences are just as significant as the similarities. >You're gonna find out that while there are key elements in common, the >differences are just as significant as the similarities. Hey I was gonna say that! >(For the record, >that last statement was made by one of those scientist/swordsmen, who is also >a kali practictioner). Obviously a brilliant man.
