I was impressed. They go for 6 rounds, 2 Shidokan (bare-knuckled), 2 Muay Thai (minus the elbow), and 2 grappling. They do this for a prelim. and semi-final bout. Then for the championship they go for 9 rounds. They brought in teams from France, Germany, and South Africa. Everyone was in top shape and the fights highlighted a number of skills. One fight was even ended with an ankle lock. Only thing missing was weapons and the ring girls (woops). Maybe next year. Let me post somthing that I've been noticing about myself. I (like I'm sure most people) do not like to get hit. As thus, lately I haven't been closing too much when I fight. Now I fair pretty good with the hand shots(though most of the people are wearing thick hockey gloves and are unrealistically aggressive because they know it doesn't hurt), and have put in my fair share of dents into the masks(once again, the people are using heavy masks and know they can't get seriosly hurt so they become unrealistic and go home with a dented mask) and even put quite a few knee shots(once again with hard knee pads) and they just keep coming. Now I enjoy fighting the new guys like this because it makes me think what if this guy did have a bowling ball head, I've been hit on the hand while fighting and not only continued the match but fought the rest of the day, and you all read the post Eric Knaus wrote about breaking his stick on Arlan Sanford's knee. I think that because these little meetings are between friends it should be the time to "try" things, not necessarily slug it out and trade blows toe to toe but some times it happens. Might as well find out what you can and can not do with a friend that will hold back that "killing blow" and not with someone that won't. This last Sunday I fought a guy that had the heaviest type of head, hand, elbow, and knee protection, you could only see about 3 inches of skin on his forearm between the gloves and elbow pad. He was 6'2" and could hit fairly hard but hasn't learned to utilize his full potential of power yet, but because of all his gear, and because I used just my (light, although not quite as light as Eric's) mask he was very very aggressive and in my opinion a little unrealistic. It made me fight a little different. Usually I am a stalker when I fight but my game had to adapt because of the way he fought. When I fight with Stuart, the fight becomes more technical where only a few hits(if even that, the last 3 times we fought no one got hit) are exchanged. This leaves me happy with myself that I didn't get hit, but not happy that I didn't hit him. What to do? Next time we fight I think we have to up the level of intensity(Stuart, look forward to seeing me up close and personal in your face...grin;). On another note, watching some footage of Eric Knaus and Arlan Sanford fight(IMHO very respectable fighters that also know each other) not too many hits are exchanged except for when they close. Adaption...isn't that what it's all about? For the record, I personally try to use evasion and not get hit at all :). Sorry for taking up so much space, Ray. These people can be mental patients or under the influence of cocaine, LSD, Meth., XTC, you mention it. Their internal temperature can climb to the point that their internal organs literally cook. One doctor suggested that their deaths could not be prevented even if they collapsed in an ER. Very dangerous people with amazing pain tolerance (saw a guy once fight off at least four coppers after he was shot--by the way he was naked). For the record, these 5 years averaged 7-9 BJJ lessons a week. 5 with Rigan Machado, 2 with Roger Machado and 2 with Renato Magno plus sundry others. The man is a stud! So I point you all to the recent interview posted on Francis Fong's web site conducted by our own Steve Grantham (hope you don't mind steve): SG - Last month, when Jean Jacques Machado was here, he commented on what a dedicated student you are in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He says you rarely miss class. You also take many private lessons in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Can you give me a ball park guess on how many lessons you've taken up to now? DI - With the Machados? I can give you closer than a ball park, I can give you exactly what I have; one thousand, one hundred and seventy private lessons under the Machados, as of last Thursday. I log all my lessons. SG - Wow. And you did most of those with Rigan? DI - I have that logged too (laughing). I think Rigan is well over 500. I train with Rigan, I train with Jean Jacques, I train with John, and I train with Roger. I do 2 lessons a week with Roger Machado. Two lessons a week with Renato Marga, whose one of top black belts of the Machados. 97, 98 Pan Am champion. I do 4 or 5 with Rigan, depending on whether I'm flying out early Friday morning or late Friday afternoon. I need to do it, because right now, if I don't stay in shape, I get out of shape faster. For me, it's very necessary, because you get out of shape faster as you get older. If I don't do it, it will be bad for me on seminars. I won't be able to present the art. I love the Machado brothers, because they get along. Snip - read the interview yourselves In another interview on the site, Jean-Jaques says: SG: I believe that Simo Paula is a blue belt in your system? JJ: Yes, she's a Blue belt, and Dan is a brown belt. He has been training every day for the last 4 years. Every time I go to the school in the morning at 8:00, he's there. Every day. He gets very frustrated when he has to miss a class. He loves to teach, and he loves to train. Especially to teach. If you allowed him to, he would teach all day long. SG: Do you feel like he's incorporating the Jiu Jitsu into his own systems? JJ: snip For Dan, I think something that keeps him going is that morning class, he goes and doesn't miss the class, if he can help it. A week ago, we had a conference there (Inosanto Instructors Conference). He was going to train with my brother at 8:00 in the morning, come back and train with me, same day. He didn't even change the gi or anything, just came from one class to the other. That's how he is. That appreciation of the art makes us feel in a sense like we are doing a good job. Snip Now if at my age I could train but a fraction of that I think I would be passing all my expectations. I watched him take part on the mat with Mauricio Gomez of Gracie Barra at a seminar here in the UK the other week. His enthusiasm is beyond repproach. (Cricket is like the English version of baseball) These only cover your hands, not wrists so you can manipulate a stick much better than in a hockey glove, but they offer really good protection. (in cricket, taking the ball on a pad is often intentional, not accidental like in baseball, so the protection has to be really good). I guess that you must be able to buy them in USA, but if not then Pat O'Malley sells them by mail order from his web site. I am currently in training for the WEKAF British open next spring, I am also a former British team member. My training goes something like this: Warm up with some doble baston Combinations with a metal bar or a kamagong in the air combinations on a bag with a regular stick abanikos on a bag abanikos in the air with a metal bar or a kamagong free play on a bag with a regular While I am doing this I will normally wear some pads on my forearm to help cook it up like in a competition. I work to 1 minute rounds. I also find that skipping & running are really good for general endurance and making footwork lighter. The only equipment I use is a tennis ball with a thick piece of wire running through it turned into loops at the ends and then fastened floor to ceiling by some bungee cords. This is really good for building up accuracy. In terms of partner drills, we always keep it simple, the foaorite is the roof block drill,(just: block, hit, block, hit, block............etc.) I hope this is of some use Jon. ------------------------------ From: "Branwen Thomas" Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 14:04:50 -0330 Subject: eskrima: re: Crafty update >PPS: Our own Animal MacYoung has an editorial in the January issue of >Black Belt magazine (the one with Gene LeBell on the cover) titled "Do you >really want to be a Streetfighter?" yah, and he doesn't even sound like a thug in it either...;) Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: "Branwen Thomas" Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 13:56:25 -0330 Subject: eskrima: re: gunting Hi Ludwig, I think she had X-rays and the rest, and from what I understand, the sheath around the nerve was "bruised" or damaged somehow, although not torn.
