Read what I wrote again. There are parts of Kali that are designed exclusively for sticks. Those parts can't be used with long heavy weapons. I then went on to describe parts of Kali that were very useful for long heavy weapons. I don't really see where any disagreement or correction is in order although I don't mind the additions about the long heavy weapons that were/are used in Kali. Thanks for replying in any case. I have seen that Unique Publications has a Silat video series by Roberto Torres, and that Part 2 is Sayaws. I would like to know more. - -Bradley Ryan >From: "Branwen Thomas" >Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 14:09:38 -0330 >Subject: eskrima: Djurus and Langkas > >Hidee ho, > > I've seen numerous mention of these on the silat list, and occasionally >here, so I was just wondering if Icould get an example or something. (sorry :D) Djurus are very much like Kata, they incorporate a number of related moves that teach the student flow and techniques and serve as a teaching device for self-defence. Typically they are relatively short in length compared to other "form" work and focus on particular related elements. So a Djuru might be "Step forward, Vertical Elbow, Drop to horse stance, sweeping legs clear, Middle block, Vertical punch, etc). A Langka is a particular footwork pattern, typically the "Stairs" pattern which teaches the entry footwork and angles. What is interesting is that the two can be combined. You can perform djurus repetitively while "Wlaking the Langka". So you step along the Pattern, perform a Djuru, then step again, perform a djuru, etc. And then of course there are Buahs.. but that is another story.. *smile* Rob Masson Boston, MA ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Gints Klimanis Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 12:31:53 -0800 Subject: Re: eskrima: Djurus and Langkas eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com wrote: > From: "Branwen Thomas" > Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 14:09:38 -0330 > Subject: eskrima: Djurus and Langkas > > I've seen numerous mention of these on the silat list, and occasionally > here, so I was just wondering if Icould get an example or something. (sorry :D) A djuru is a combination of hand movements - your handwork. A langka is a combination of leg movements - your footwork. (The spelling of varies.) Each combo is learned independently. Then, langkas are added to the djurus. While you can make up your own djurus or langkas, the standard patterns were designed to develop the muscle memory used for a particular style. That is, each movement in a langka or djuru is a generic movement rather than one movement for a single application. ------------------------------ From: OnEHyPeRPnAy@aol.com Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 21:01:28 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: is escrima and eskrima the same i was just wondering if the martial art escrima and eskrima are the same but different spelling.... i'm just 14 & i don't really know.... okie dokie thanks! bye bye! ~Geralyn Carreon ------------------------------ From: LeighanS@aol.com Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 21:07:01 EST Subject: eskrima: question about knives from: leighans@aol.com if anyone has any experience good or bad with blades from ontario knife, i would like to hear....any and everything from their spec-plus line up to and including the bagwell series bowies.......just drop me a line privately....thanks a bunch ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 23:19:40 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Pekiti-Tirsia Charity Seminar Just a reminder that the annual Pekiti-Tirsia Charity Seminar will be held this Saturday (Dec 11th).
