A lot of testosterone flies through the escrima digest pages but, do you think that this fight in this public forum is the answer? Do you think that all the readers out there aren't sitting back in there chairs laughing their asses off. Guys, you need to talk off the digest, better yet on the phone. Nothing will be solved by bickering on these pages. All you are going to do is try and out do each other. I know and like both of you both very much and I know that this is a stupid fight, over Marc Denny on top of that. Is he that important to you? You know Marc is sitting back loving this. Think about it, you know he is saying "all this attention over me? Keep it coming. Wolf!" Please call each other. However, I also know the value of being able to power in (and take a shot to do it if necessary). I'm probably what Tuhon Bill would call a "technician", and I'm trying to learn to be more of a "fighter". My natural tendency is to back away and kick - i love sticks for handling things i wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole...however my Sifu emphasizes that attack ability is (of course) as important as defense ability. So in our tag-sparring, myself and a partner will, for example go a round with one person *only* attacking, the other *only* defending, and then we'll switch. One of the other Roaring Girls is about my height, weight etc, and together we train fine points of technique and what to do against a fairly even match; then we'll train with one of the really tall guys to work against that disadvantage, then one of the heavier, more grappling inclined guys to work that, etc etc etc. They're really good about making us work for it, but I think they look at it as they are helping us, and don't always consider that one day they might run up against a small guy with an attitude...at any rate we're collecting our lumps of training...in the process, of course, sometimes our footwork/squirmability is an asset, sometimes charging in and slugging it out works (mostly 'cause they don't expect us to;). As others have said, the more tools you have the better...mobility and power both have their uses...the real trick is to figure out which one is best for a given job (and do it quickly enough :) You may prefer one over the other, but you should be able to use whatever you have in either department. Given that I don't have as much power as others, I try to use a little for maximum effect...and my footwork gets me to the right spot to do it. Personality clashes aside, arguing footwork vs power is silly - it's like arguing grappling vs kickboxing or technique vs mindset....you can accomplish more with both than with just one. 0.02c :) jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 13:43:43 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Pekiti MPEG video clips The December MPEG video clips are now on the PTI web site (www.pekiti-tirsia.com) Go to the "Contents" page and click "MPEG VIDEO CLIPS". Each clip is 1 to 2 megs in size and runs from 30 to 60 seconds. A new clip will be added each month and will remain on the site for two months. To view the clips in Windows 98, go to "WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER", which is found in the "ENTERTAINMENT" section of "ACCESSORIES" (other operating systems should have a similar program). This month I have two clips. One from this past Saturday's charity seminar on walking stick technique and the other showing Solo Baston Abcedario set 1. Animal with > I'm not an ape I use tools. And the Rocky editorial > Footwork smutwork!! I diagree BTW that: > techniques. Foot work is one of the most over blown topics... You see > your feet can not move your stomach, chest, or head nearly as fast as > they can move themselves... reacting to the movement of ones upper body. Footwork is keeping up with your body and using your body and assisting body mechanics to deleiver in close quarters like doing a bob and weave needs footwork to deliver power. Enough of that... Then Crafty's prose: bra. Another natural.> The bailsbond's men. etc. I can hardly wait to Crafty's next post! Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. I have been attacked in jail cells, the hallway of the court room, in showers and bathrooms and locker rooms, none of which lend themselves to a great deal of "mobility." My footwork, which we train to ingrain (Jesus, that sounds like a Johnnie Cochran line), saved my butt every single time. As for "quick and intense aggression placed upon my person," a felon seldom announces his intentions before attempting to take your head off...the stuff hits the fan with alarming and frightening intensity, and instinct takes over. If your footwork is ingrained through realistic and repetitive training, it will be there if you need it. Seldom used in real situations? Well, I've been there, time and time and time again, and believe me, it is very disconcerting to your attacker if his intended target suddenly isn't where he expected you to be, thanks to superior training and that damned fancy footwork. We also had a few experienced boxers come into lockup, and they were the ones we respected, not for their punching power, (hell, we had all been hit at one time or another) but for the elusiveness. You can't hit (or restrain) what ain't there. I'm not talking about the "stick and move stuff" in a real situation, but rather the use of footwork to take yourself out of the line of attack, while remaining in an advantageous position....i.e., be able to avoid punishment while still dishing it out. To illustrate what I'm referring to, check out Mike Tyson's fight with Buster Mathis Jr.,...Mike was nose to nose with Mathis, getting nowhere, until he used footwork to step out, angle away from Mathis, but still be within range to land the telling knockout blow. Best example of footwork I can remember seeing for a loooong time.
