My co-workers husband attends school there. The doctors are from all over the world Russia, China, Israel, etc. A lot of professional dancers go there to be treated for tendons and ligament injuries. They speak fluent English and third year students work on you under the supervision of the doctor at a reduced fee. If this is for something long term like chronic pain, it works great. Otherwise I work at UCSF and still believe western medicine is the best at treating short term medical problems and conditions. Jeff. From: Ron Levy Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 15:51:06 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Meridians, and so on Hearing about alternative medical techniques and their effectiveness is always wonderful. I find that my problem currently is in finding one of these skilled practicioners. Does anyone have any pointers to someone in the Bay Area with whom they've had a good experience? Like anyone looking for a physician, I'd be looking for: Diagnosis.. if a physician can tell me what's wrong by looking at my tongue and testing my ten pulses, I'm totally behind him. Communication.. a two-way street. He has to be able to tell me what's wrong and what steps I have to take to correct it, and I have to be willing to understand. (Unfortunately, I have a shameful lack of fluency in Eastern languages.) Correction.. probably the easiest part of medicine once you get past the first two. Giving the right treatment. Following the treatment is the two-way street on this one. As this isn't a mailing list for advertising acupuncturists, please feel free to make suggestions to private email. I don't think I ever consciously ever considered any footwork at those intense moments. That had already been done in the training gym, leaving the important considerations for the right moment. Within a crowd the range considered in the "get-in-and-get-out mobility game" would be greatly affected by the environment. In a nice controlled environment of the gym which an even floor and no glass, fluid etc sprinkled at the feet the get-in-get-out-zone will be quite big. In a real fight in a crowd this range will change drastically. This may be come down to the inability to kick due to lack of room or slippery surfaces. Seating(fixed) may also be a determining factor. In the middle of a crowd you will find space. That tunnel vision moments will not afford you the thinking that you will not have it. I was always conscious of whether the floor surface was hospitable or not though. In the many situations I was in I cannot remember ever having to think about my footwork. I have recounted before, but will recount again as I feel it is suitable, a situation against an armed assailant one time. Close to christmas and I was off work with flu. A neighbour called for assistance and I went with her boyfriend to stop two known drug users from breaking into a house in order to help themselves to some child's Christmas presents. Having had to give chase to one, I was able to corner him in a playing field. The ground was thick grass and sodden from the recent rain. It was sloping down to me. The housebreaker in front of me then produced a small baseball bat from his jacket and started swinging it. Hey! I've been there in the gym I thought. After he swung one way I tried to move in on him only to find that the combination of environment, health and f^cking fear were somewhat inhibiting the "get-in-and-get-out mobility game". Of course this fiend was looking at a 222lb man huffing like a dragon alongside someone else both trying to move in on him despite him having the weapon! Scary shit for him this as he dreamt of the safety of 'chase of the dragon' taking him to sweet sickly dreams. At the same time I was, realising that I wasn't going to get in without being hit, so began telling him that I had his face imprinted in my memory and that I was going to make it my new years resolution to search him out and give him the biggest kicking he had ever had. So he turns and tries to get scale the wire fence only for the two of us to alight on our target like a pack of hounds catching a fox. The relief and release of adrenaline at this moment can be very damaging to your opponents health. There is no trophy bar the ego lift from the street gossip that will spread like wildfire. Thankfully I do not live in that environment any more. No houses were broken into that Christmas in our direct area for the first time in several years incidentally. So in answer to part c, it is a fight, but it is a sport fight which has its own meaning and rewards and they shouldn't be disrespected. Its always real when you get hit. Referring to the macdonalds analogy from Rocky, I don't eat there. Sometimes I pop in there or into Burger King but although I used to be vegetarian my diet is a lot wider than that. I think the term "Num" comes from a group called the "Kung" (no B.S. muchachos, ees reel). I don't have a reference for ya (you'll have to look this one up y'self) but they train people from childhood as healers. When the healer enters trance, the body becomes hot from the manifestation of "num" and they embrace the person who needs to be healed. Reminds me of the Tibetan "Tumo" practice and other "yogic" practices that focus on the "tan tien"/"hara" ... which also have healing connections. OK ... a quick obligatory trek down anthropology lane here ... first wave out of Africa apparently made it past the Himalayas, then some returned before the second wave of our original human adventurers. Don't believe a word that I say, check it out. On a battlefield, with crowds of screaming bashing fighting people, kali worked, didn't it? I guess you adjust it to your situation. If it's a small space hemmed in by lots of people, you use more close-in techniques...if people back away and give you space, then you use some footwork. (gaah..i'm being really general, but i'm sure you all get the idea) >2) Mobility vs. Power: If you were in the ring against a man coming at you >with a stick while fired up by the roar of 2,500 hardcore fight fans, could >you consistently play a "get in and get out" mobility game against a worthy >adversary? Who could? See answer above - if you're going to get bashed, i imagine everything else disappears...people who have trained for it could, i guess. The narrowing of focus which occurs when you are the target presumably kicks in and makes the screaming fans into background noise you filter out. 3) Is this a "fight" or is it "sparring"? Why? > If there's a winner it's a fight; if you're training (even hardcore) it's sparring. it's the attitude which makes it what it is. does any of that sound reasonable? :) jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: ARNISTE@aol.com Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 12:09:13 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Arnisador/Eskrimador in Hollywood Meowmix to all, Yes the Best of the Best 4 or BB4 had good stick figth at the end.
