An excellent read for the martial artist is "The Mighty Atom" the story of vaudeville strongman Joe Greenstein. Greenstein earned his living in "no holds barred" wrestling matches and doing a strongman act in which he would rips things apart or bend items such as horseshoes with his bare hands. Greenstein was very big on breathing exercises to increase overall strength (chi?). One of the feats of strength he performed during his act was to have a steel chain rapped around his chest and break it with just the expansion of his lungs. One of his last performances of this feat was in the early 1970's at Aaron Banks' Oriental World of Self Defense when Greenstein was in his 70's. >> I emphatically agree with Bill's review of this book. Good luck trying to find it, though, it's been out of print for years. One funny story is where Joe Greenstein was attacked by a bunch of American Naxis around World War Two. The "Atom" took a baseball bat from one of them at beat them all senseless. In court the judge took one look at these numerous big (bruised) bruisers and asked the diminutive Mr. Greenstein what happened. "Well, your Honor, every time I swung the bat I hit a homerun!" Case dismissed. The most well known book on this is Super Squats by Randall Strossen. The program is based around a set of 20 barbell squats with deep diaphramic (sp?) breathing between each rep. Immediately after this set you would lie on a bench and do 20 pullovers with a light weight and also using deep breathing. This last set is believed to stretch out and enlarge the rib cage. It's a GRUELING program and will quickly lead to overtraining if you're not carefull. When i was using this program (before grad school started and my life went insane) i noticed an incredible improvement in my stamina and overall body power and i did no supplementary cardio work at all. This may be strange but I would like to quote two examples: a) I was not aware of the importance of mental relaxation in a fight until the guy teaching a seminar kept screaming at me "Breathe!". It seems that in a stressful situation I tend to hold my breath. b) Watch George Forman. Given his weight and age is aerobic capacity cannot match that of some of his younger opponents, but he is totally relaxed in the ring and uses a fraction of the energy his opponents do. > Regarding the relative benefit of roadwork and chigongs, the latter put the muscles through more varied workout, involve more muscles and there is also quite significant stretching component. You moron!!! You got me confused with Steven Segal!!! All I ever did was some body guarding, Brass ring productions years ago ( mostly for free passes to rock concerts ) 2 short gigs with Mark one investigation. Worked for Euromart services 87 to 88 owned by Fadi Souri ( owns several oil companies here in the U.S and apartment complexes in Lebanon. ( and the work was far to dangerous for my liking). Tried to work for DSI international, did a few seminars for them and from them, but at the time they were looking for ex -military or ex Leo's which hey I could understand if that was their policy that's their policy. In 1985 I was the first person to introduce Modern Arnis and Balintawak to Sweden, Vastros (sp ) The Swedish Government picked the tab up for that one, gave several seminars and one private seminar for a group of military people who were just discovering the Filipino arts in 1989 and were looking for improvements in their hand to hand stuff. In fact Remy Presas's student and mine Mikial Daviddson did end up working for DSI I believe he also did a stint in Lebanon or somewhere over their, if he is as crazy and fearless as he use to be he may even be in the Bosnia area now, call information he's listed in Sweden, all though he may be retired. Davince' Siljanowski is working out of Macedonia ( sp ) he to is listed. I can give their names Tommy boy because they are not doing anything " top secret" as you would seem to assume, just working as body guards. Since we've finally moved on to a new topic from toe-to-toe vs. footwork, I’ve got one for all. Since we had so much from our swordfighter and stickfighter, how about this: Single stick fighter, right handed, only trained with single stick faces a double stick fighter, right handed, only trained with double sticks. The question is not who would win, because that kind of question has only one way of being answered. The questions are 1) What do you think are the advantages and/or disadvantages and why? 2) What if they both had single stick? 3) What if they both had double sticks? I understand this is not a black or white answer post so no one can be wrong or right, but usually the guy that has fought and done something in real time holds more weight than the guy that heard about it and never actually saw or did it. Theories and philosophies look fine on paper but are always nicer when you say you did it. Don't know if that sounds right and I hope no one takes it wrong but it seems like some people don't believe in full contact sparring. All I'm sying is don't knock it until you try it. On the flip side of that, someone that has gone full contact shouldn't tell the other person that hasn't anything about...well you get the point. Let's all be brothers in the FMA. Not directing it to anyone, but I still do think that the way to “know” and not to just “believe” in what you do is to put it on the line in a realistic way. If you don’t feel confident about realistically sparring with this guy that will pull the “killing blow”, how can you be so confident that your stuff won’t get you into trouble on the street. Now I admit that a “match” that you walk into is different than a “self defense” situation (someone pushing you or pulling his fist all the way back) and even different than a smart street gang mugging. They all have different paths going in somewhat the same direction. The way to experience the mugging is to wear a lot of jewelry and walk through some bad neighborhood in Chicago or L.A. For the self defense you can either wait for someone to singularly attack you where you can most likely see him, or tell some drunk guy at a bar that his mom is ugly and wait for him to punch you (that was me being comedical [is that even a word] and besides I’m not trying to give the bouncers out there a hard time…unless you guys could use the practice) but anyways, and the full contact sparring is something that can be done with your friends. Even scenario training for mugging teaches you certain aspects, but you have to learn how to deal with adrenaline, and full contact is one way to do it. Don’t get me wrong…learn all your sayaws, drills, flows, deflections, disarms first because after about 50 fights you can start to see where some of the stuff your teacher taught you can be used. Actually sooner than that, but don’t be fooled there’s a lot more fights until you can actually do the things in a real life match. And you can’t get any worse. With all the gear on the worst you can usually walk away with are bruises and a bruised ego. Don’t know if I ever made this point clear yet, but when someone goes for my knees, it’s not footwork that saves me, it’s fear mixed with my experience of distance and timing that I must say I got by having a stick swoosh by my bare patella. I know Stuart (guerilla in the mist) can vouge for that. I've overextended my stay here, but a web page is in the works in which I plan to promote using certain methods of training as a vehicle. Anyone interested in that kind of page out there? Anyways, thanks for being my sounding board. If no one chooses to respond to that above question, I’ll understand and repost later, as I seem to have unwittingly posted a long post that’s sure to cause reaction. Hey guys let’s try and keep this a clean one. What one man “would” or “would not” do, does not mean another “should” or “should not” do. Let’s pull any punches in this one (unless the guy is a complete moron, and I think there are a few on here) but anyway this is the eskrima-digest and not the trash-digest. 1001 different subscribers, 1001 different P.O.V.’s. Actually probably less P.O.V.’s than that…On yet another note, silly as it may sound, hope everyone is prepared for the Y2K as far as possible electric/water/phone loss. Just a wish and not a topic for the post. I agree with Tom out there that the good knife fighters are the ones that are alive. I have got to say that Leo Gaje has truly got the flow with a knife and I sure wouldn't want to meet him in some dark alley with a knife. On a side note, Pekiti tirsia is ceartainly a very nice blade "aware" art and even though I've never been taught by Grand Tuhon Gaje/Tuhon McGrath/Eric Knaus I have "learned" a lot from them. Thank you gentlemen. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ray for accepting such a long post and Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas) to all. ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
