I have a friend who only trained about 6 month with me a few years back. He is real wirery and exceptionally strong for his size, and in good shape can run long distances, has a physical job, works like a horse. But every time he try's to spar or do anything physical, even with friends who aren't out to hurt him he gets so bound up that after 1 to 2 minutes of activity he is spent.I have seen this in the boxing gym before but never to this extent. I tried everything to try and get him relaxed, we would practice rhythm foot that they teach in the Kronk gym in Detroit, with no contact, he kind of picked it up, but as soon as he went at someone boom it happened again. Recently he expressed interest in training again. I thought it would be a good idea for him to do some Tai Chi, or other internal art either first or at the same time. The internal arts are not my strong points. Any suggestions!!! ------------------------------ From: SolAndes@aol.com Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 09:10:54 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V6 #524 In a message dated 12/19/99 4:28:58 AM !!!First Boot!!!, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << An excellent read for the martial artist is "The Mighty Atom" the story of vaudeville strongman Joe Greenstein. >> You can get this book at www.ironmind.com They've re-published the book. I am following for a little while the discussions about "The Best Knife-fighter". Instead of asking this kind of question I would rather ask something like "Who is the best teacher for knife-"fighting"? or Who has build the best knife-"fighting" men?" The reason for changing the question is that I would like to see it more like "How can I gain from them or how do they let me grow?" (again 2 questions :-) ) I am sure that there are a lot of men and women around who are very good fighters, probably killed a few, perhaps without ever having trained any FMA - but is this really my goal, do I want to kill anybody? Instead of "fighting" with the knife I would rather like to call it "surviving", the knife should help to survive not to kill. And the second question is if they are good teachers. Although looking from this point of view I would share the votes of Bill McGrath and Dave Gould either, because those people were and are able to teach and share - they are masters in fighting AND TEACHING. just my 2 Euro ;-) Greetings and mary christmas! Randall Stossen's book is full of entertaining stories of the old-timers and is a very good read, but McRobert's book gives MUCH more training info. He also has a website at www.hardgainer.com I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of the program, being the classic "hardgainer" myself. It's hard, but it works. Happy holidays to all the members of the Digest, Kim ------------------------------ From: Someone with a Yahoo account Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 14:34:53 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: training partner in san diego? I'm a FMA beginner in San Diego and will be starting private training in arnis under Gary Fletcher (Maestro under Narrie Babao). I'm looking for someone to train with a few times a week; we'd take a semi-private with him once or twice a week and then practice whenever is convenient (my schedule is flexible). Training would run about $20/lesson and would be at his palce of work (near balboa park). He also has BJJ training so we'd likely work in some grappling with the traditional knife/stick work. I live in the mission hills area so someone within 15/20 minutes drive would be ideal. Lemme know if you're interested. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
