The point of this is to perpetuate the Philippine Fighting Arts and using realistic sparring as ONE of the vehicles to learn. Later there will be other writings on actual pros and cons, but for now it’s just a brief description of my journey so you can get a better understanding of where I’m coming from. Right now it’s not on a web page, but eventually I plan to get a web site up, but am still looking at possibilities. E-mail me, let me know what you think, I may have other writings done before my page is up. I will post on the digest if this happens. Enjoy!!! "Are you afraid of my dad? Do you think you can kick his ass?" What an odd question I thought, than told her that I wasn't "afraid" of him but I would never fight with him out of respect for my elders. Little was I to know that in a few short months my life would change direction forever. He was my girlfriend's grandfather and that was her auntie asking me those "trick" questions. She knew very well that he was someone to be afraid of. Actually only if you crossed his path the wrong way. I still remember my girlfriend and her 16 year old friend laughing at me because I could not make the two sticks work in unison. They already knew how to do the most basic heaven 6 (6-count siniwalli), however this was my fist time. Her grandfather told me that this is where we would start my training. In his garage, behind an old rusted jeep that didn't run. Those were the days. Soon after that, I realized that I had found my new love. Because my teacher had such a high emphasis on the basics, I would have to talk his son-in-law (which would make him my uncle in law, but since we were only a few years apart we were more like brothers-in-law. I know it's a long story) into teaching me more of the art. At the time though, his interest were wondering into other places, so I had to train extra hard and "uncover" things on my own. Now I could "catch him" and since he had a few years of experience this made him practice and push himself. Now he was back into the sticks. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Now that I had someone better than me, I had a goal. Become better than him. However this also meant that the better I got, the better he had to get, so it became a race. This led to many midnight practices over the course of a few years. We would get together about 5 to 6 times a week and practice from 11 pm until about 3:30 or 4 in the morning. These particular practices ranged to everything from set pattern drills to free flow drills to light sparring to just telling him to "hit me as hard as you can" so we could see if something works. Of course we have disagreed on many things over time. For example, he was a lot leaner than I was, meaning he was faster. I was also stronger than he was. We also thought differently. Accordingly, even though we had come from the same source, we had developed different styles, unique to ourselves. Many of our workouts have started with "Hey, what do you think of this?” with his reply being, "ah, that wouldn't work". Of course, I took that as a direct challenge. Now I had to prove it worked, and of course, proving doing something that he was expecting me to do was not always easy. We did this dance for a few years and because of circumstances I broke up with my girlfriend, moved out, but continued my learning. Now comes the third part of the triangle. - -------------- Anyone interested in it can check out Stuart's web site at wwwhelper.com/sigarta/index.html for a very resourceful visit. There is no (.) between www and helper, just one word. Everything from affordable housing in Hawaii to the best Kukris that we've seen to the best commercial rattan (Kombat Instrument) to my very own corner in this www until I get my page up. Very nice site that is up but still working on a few sections. BTW, the third part of the triangle is Stuart and the rest of the article is on his home page. ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Suro Mike Inay created the first knife defense for LEO's and the like when he created Spontaneous Knife Defense and later Reacative Knife Defense. Now these are being taught to LEO's around the world and to civies. I study Eskrima at one of his schools in TN and there isn't a class that goes by that we do not work on blade defense, awareness etc. Since less is more, if you can create a program that is simple enough for the average LEO to learn and that is effective, this is the true spirit of Eskrima. It is still under construction, but I should get it finished over the holiday break. The address is: www.geocities.com/jonbroster/welcome.html I will be posting reviews of some of the Abaniko videos, until then I recommend Suro Mike Inay's "Kadena de Mano" tapes as some of the best instructional videos available, but I would avoid Bob Breen's JKD series, which are all very basic and were described to me by one JKD luminary as dreadful !! I am thinking of buying several on Kali/Eskrima/Arnis, and JKD. Would you recommend them? If anyone has any of there video's please e-mail me your thoughts. AKRKALI@aol.com Thanks, and Happy Holliday! Dave I have seen the Inayan tapes on Kadena de Mano (My instructor has the whole set of 5 on Inayan/Serrada Eskrima) and they are excellent in both production quality and content. In case you didn't know they are produced by Guro Dieter Knuttel a high ranking German Modern Arnis Instructor, this probably explains why they are so easy to understand as he has an understanding of the arts and how best to put them over. The tapes make use of titles to break down each section and show close ups and slow motions as appropriate as well as reverse angles to aid clarity. The majority of the Kadena de Mano tapes are narrated over the top rather than try and have the instructor do two jobs at once. IIRC, the JKD tapes are by Bob Breen one of the UK's top JKD Instructors. You can find them at www.abanico.de - as some people so nicely told me the other week. Hope this helps. p.s. Happy hols to everybody, thanks to Ray for all your hard work. I'm off training now - we're doing environmental training out in the snow and with all our winter coats on! Clearly shot, well narrated, and slow motion used to clarify items that simply happen too fast to see. I highly recommend them. This past weekend, we had the pleasure of hosting a Randy Couture seminar. The man is truly a world class athlete! We worked really hard for both days, and I feel that my clinch game has improved dramatically. I am very excited about adapting these drills to my stick fighting. One of the best thing about the seminar was that Randy grapple with every body after the seminar was over. I have been to too many seminars where grappling or free rolling was counted as part of the seminar, sometimes up to two hours. The seminar was awesome! Woof! Alvis W. Solis Hound Dog!
