It is easily in the 80's here in Ft. Lauderdale. Martial Arts training is difficult with these 70 to 80 hour weeks. This list, my boys, and training, (lifting with my wife, and martial arts) help keep sanity in my hectic life. Thanks to all the intelligent, thoughtful, members. Dave ------------------------------ From: Wschpunyo@aol.com Date: Fri, 24 Dec 1999 01:15:36 EST Subject: eskrima: Dancing in the moon light Greetings: A friend and coworker came by my house last night to drop off a cedar log (hey, it's free) for a Wing Chun dummy I'm going to build. Earlier in the evening I had been out walking my dog and marveling at the extremely bright full moon of the winter solstice when it occurred to me that this would be an interesting training opportunity ....and now I had a vic, uh I mean training partner. Ron is a big Norwegian with a temper to match and is a BB in a Shoalin-Mantis style. I have been teaching him some stick work off and on during our lunch breaks for about a year or so. I knew he wouldn't want to go freestyle so we started out with some basic six, eight, and ten count patterns to get warmed up. The front yard is open so there was plenty of moon light illuminating the area. The moon was bright enough to see each other fairly well, though dark enough to move your focus level up a few notches. Then we went into the Cobb-Cobb super set and worked our way over to the side yard where there is a lot of trees. There were patches of moon light breaking through here and there and we discovered that as one of us moved through a patch of light, our focus would be drawn to whatever part of the persons body was illuminated, but you would lose sight of the rest of the body that was in the shadows. In the dark our night vision would allow to still make out what movements the other person was attempting, but sometimes a random patch of light would completely disrupt it. A bit unnerving when you lose sight of your partners sticks. I also found that I could use the light to my advantage by using pressing attacks and trying to maneuver him into the light. The moment light hit his face (while I was still in the shadows) I would immediately break and angle out to the left or right past his guard and turn to give him a friendly poke in the side. The adjustment of his eyes from dark to light slowed his reaction enough to allow me to get by. Admittedly we were working preset drills, but I think this was a good way to work on awareness/focus, sensitivity, and using the environment to your advantage. Now I need to get someone to try it with me freestyle so everything is unpredictable and see what happens. For what it's worth, (my neighbors think I'm nuts, but I'm having fun) Bill Schultz P.C.M.A. wschpunyo@aol.com ps. Merry Christmas.
