We had a special Sunday Battle this week. Our (James and I) old fellow student, Kalani, came down from New Mexico to visit family for Christmas and met up with us for some good old fashion fun stickfighting. Stuart didn't make it, but James, myself, Leroy, Kalani, and another no-name student (his instructor discouraged him from training with us because we are not "true" escrima practicioners) fought inspite of poring rain and muddy ground. I know we've all gotten over the Footwork vs. toe-to-toe, but in muddy ground I could not apply the footwork I usually do for the invasion. The result? A nice long welt about 12 to 13 inches long with the top inch and a half missing skin (it'll be on the website once we develop the pictures) running the course down my arm courtesy of Kalani. It is an interesting experience smelling the burn of rattan and skin at the same time. Especially when it's your skin. Oh yeah, nice wrist shot too, Kalani. The fight between James and myself was respectable as we know each other all too well. All I can say about my fights is that this week I'll be working on that toe-to-toe for Kalani in case it rains again. James had a nice clean entry on the no-name guy with a few clean thrust to the belly. Leroy caught Kalani with an almost solid shot to the knee that was definitely respectable, leaving a welt and I think a little skin tear right on the patela(sp). James has a nice purple welt running from his chest up to his shoulder (he also fought without his shirt, the show-off). So far I think I have been the hardest hitter here until Kalani. He at least matches me if not harder. Definitely a new experience for me in dealing with his power. Kalani still has the same flavor I remember he had, but he has a nice blend of basic evasion and toe-to-toe power. Strong ones and twos that you don't want to really deal with. Leroy did a good job and is now a regular fighter with us. he also caught James solid up side the head. Kalani caught Leroy and the no-name guy up side their heads a few times. It's also nice to see Kalani going home with his arm welted up with a few shots. I know he's proud of them, not in the fact that he got them, but in the fact that he's training realistically. Nice day guys. ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? But it does make for a catchy myth. - --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Share what you know. Guro Eagan ------------------------------ From: "IESA" Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1999 09:47:30 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Thanks and have a Safe and Happy New Year Dear Memebers. First of all, we would like to wish all of you a very safe and Happy New Year. Although it's been a challenging year, the new millenium will be a fresh start for all of us. We're looking forward to all the new things to come as martial artists. Second of all, IESA went through its first ever ranking ceremony where the art was formally passed down from Master Sultan Uddin to his guros and students. Senior students received their white sashes, indicating completion of the basic curriculum, and advanced guros received green sashes, which indicate not only completion of the basic curriculum, but also completion of numerous seminars. Speaking for all of IESA's students and advanced guros, I'd like to thank all of you who helped us to learn the basics of the at. Without your patience and persistence in teaching us the basics, we would not have gotten to this level, which is the highest it's ever been in IESA's history. I'd also like to thank all of the subscribers and the list administrator for sharing all of your opinions and knowledge of the arts. With that, have a great New Year.
