On the other hand, if they're willing to drive all the way to Frederick, MD there are other groups they should also check out ... one of them is our club (Filipino, Indonesian Martial Arts Club - email me for details). I can provide contact info for the others if the person is really interested. I don't recall who asked the original question, but it would help if they provided more details as to the exact location since "central" VA covers a lot of territory. Respectfully, Dave Fulton. The first is Sharkee training knives. They come in a hard and slightly rounded plastic and allow for a good sense of where the edge is without the annoying pain that can come from aluminum blades. I anticipate that we will be using them instead of the rattan dowels of the past at the next Gathering of the Pack in an effort to increase the reality factor of the knife sparring that opens the day. Go to www.sharkee.com And the second is the padded sticks from ActionFlex at www.samuraisports.com Frankly, they cost distinctly more than your typical stick, but they are in my opinion, a distinctly better stick. Although they have not yet gotten the full Dog Brother test ;-), they seem to hold up well in sparring with a good combination of durability, firmness, and flex. The silat techniques are definitely there but you will probably need to be well-versed in silat in order to get anything out of them. In other words, they are not broken done as well for a teching tool as other silat tapes are (Bob Orlando's and Steven Plinck's for example). Also, some of the history of the origins of Serak may be more fiction than fact. As a reformed smoker, the lessons learnt from smoking while training are pretty useless. Ditch 'em, and watch your health/fitness improve. Also, can anyone recommend some eskrimadors in Brisbane Australia? I train with C. Navarro, a family style, but I'm interested in expanding my knowledge.
