Ray Terry, PO Box 110841, Campbell, CA 95011 FMA@MartialArtsResource.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 00:12:21 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Pekiti web site I have added a "Training Partner Message Board" to the Pekiti-Tirsia International web site. If you are looking for someone to practice Pekiti-Tirsia with, please visit the PTI web site (www.pekiti-tirsia.com) and you will find instructions on posting a message. I have also added a page I call "Down Memory Lane." It is a photo gallery of some of my collection from the 70's and 80's. You will find photos from tournaments and demos and some of Tuhon Gaje's magazine covers (plus some funny shots of a really skinny kid with big hair). Each photo has a caption that explains it. As I go through my collection I will add more photos. How different are they to a length of cane just wrapped in foam and > taped? > > John Taylor. My experience has been that foam usually starts breaking up in fairly short order. If the rattan is thinner in order to achieve a typical stick diameter, it often breaks easily under moderate sparring pressure. If not, then the diameter can be quite large. There have been cases of the stick shooting out the end during a vigorous swing-- which obviously can be quite dangerous. A large mirror at the old Inosanto Academy was broken this way once. My understanding is that the core of these is a material similar to that of a fishing pole which gives a pleasant to use blend of firmness and flexibility with the padding covered in a way that seems likely to have good longevity. The weighting doesn't feel weird like some padded sticks do. On the receiving end, the flexibility and padding used take the annoying quality that can still be there with some padded sticks out of the equation. I've turned Guro I. onto them last night he had us use them for the first time for a hit-the- hand-and-whiz-a-combo-follow-up training, every one felt comfortable dishing out and receiving repeated moderate shots to the hand. Don't know (yet) what will happen with hard sparring, there's some sort of guarantee, but they seem ideal for lots of training where you would like to have some contact, e.g. sombrada, without anybody getting cranky. I ain't a shill for these sticks, not $ to me or any of that, just thought I'd mention it. Myself and the students of Arnis Balite wanted to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year. With the hope that nothing but prosperity is in the future. This past year I have found in the martial arts many good people that have demonstrated a true brotherhood and spirit. But also I have found some that do not. For those I hope they will find the path. So live long, continue to gain knowledge and prosper. And I wish nothing but continued prosperity in the Millennium. Not that I want to resurrect the toe2toe v. footwork but, this is were enviromental conditions come into play. If anything it would be fun, probably not many spectators, but fun none the less. She has worked hard and diligenlty to honor the Inayan clan and has done so with the true spirit of the warrior, patiently and quietly. She is the first Female Guro in Inayan Eskrima. It is my hope that more will follow, however I do not award Guro ranks out lightly and so there are very, very few candidates. Additionly I have announced the promotions of Cory Hanosh to the rank of Lahong Guro, Jason Inay to the rank of Lahong Guro and Jeff Elliott to the rank of Masirib Guro. These ranks represent dedication, loyalty (Something most people dont get) and growth within the arts. They are again earned and are difficult to attain because time, duration and active participation in the arts are a crtical factor achieving these ranks. May you all have a rewarding new Millenium. And as we have said 35 years ago and we shall say it again for it is my hope that it shall endure: Mabuhay Ang Eskrima!
