Mr. Terry, This was also happening to me for about two months, then it "fixed" itself. I can access the website now without any problems. K. Williams ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2000 12:01:57 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Erwin Ballarta Erwin Ballarta is one of Tuhon Gaje's original students from Pekiti's early days in the U.S. He has won several Pekiti Full Contact Tournaments, (for many years it seemed he and Tom Bisio were trading the champion trophy back and forth) holds the rank of Mataas na Guro in Pekiti-Tirsia and is Pekiti-Tirsia International's Director for Law Enforcement Training. Erwin and I were roommates in Big Spring Texas back in 1982 when we both moved to Texas (he from Detroit, me from New York) to train with Tuhon Gaje. Soon after arriving in Big Spring he accepted a position as a Police Officer with the Big Spring Police Dept and it wasn't very long after that that he was teaching defensive tactics to their officers on an official basis. Erwin is now a Lieutenant with the Texas Dept of Public Safety (their State Police) and is the Chief Defensive Tactics Instructor at the TDPS Academy. He has also served on their Protective Division, guarding the governor among other dignitaries. Erwin is an excellent instructor and I highly recommend anyone in his area to study with him. You can read his full bio on the "Directors and Contacts List" page on the PTI web site (www.pekiti-tirsia.com). This was in 1985 called Spontaneous Knife Defense. The name of this program is now called Reactive Knife. Hope this clarifies things for you Steve. Patrick N. I just got back from = spending some time in NYC and finally I have thawed out to write. In ED issue # 527 Sid Stein mentioned his article in FMA magazine but he = failed to mention how great his interview with Suro Mike Inay was. It = was certainly an eye opener to me. What appealed to me about this = article was how much wisdom Suro Inay contained and how he generally = promoted all systems of FMA not just own. I also thought it was kind of = ironic that some of the time what I read on ED goes against what Suro = Inay believes. Without giving the whole article away I would like to = expound on two points that Suro Mike Inay makes regarding subjects that = have been discussed before on ED: stickfighting tournaments and eclectic = or cross training. On stickfighting - Suro Mike Inay says that whenever rules are applied = to an art that was meant to disable, seriously injure, or kill, it = becomes less effective. My personal note based on what I have read and = seen on TV - Dogbrothers tournaments may be the only exception to this = rule even though they may have 1 rule. On eclectic or cross training - Suro Mike Inay says that there are a lot = of people out there that are taught that the FMA is one big bunch of = jumbled up techniques because there is an inclination to learn a few = techniques from different styles. He goes on to say that he has nothing = against these type of people but what a shame it is to lose an entire = style because no one has the patience to learn it. My personal view - = find a good instructor and system and try to learn the entire system. If = it's any good allow yourself at least 20 years to master it and then = another 20 years to really apply it.
