IMHO, heck no muchacho. I'm not much but I can recount multiple times when someone has flipped that at me when I was in the "right" about something (e.g., traffic stuff) ... and I subsequently followed or chased them ... would have let it go if they hadn't done the "bird" thing. After a nonsense traffic interaction I've experienced internal "resolution" and calming only to snap into "condition red" when someone did da bird at me. Consider that there is someone out there with birdshot. Not the best way to learn self control or generalized respect (yah, we have to respect idiots too to protect both us and them from themselves :-) but the message is clear, eh? Truth be told I can remember one night a young guy and I talked about the "tools" that we both had in ready reach after he and his lady did the bird because I wasn't driving fast enough for them. Be careful friend. Martial arts ain't about being tough in the parking lot. Too often I think people look at fight as fun. You may feel good about going through your internal routine on looking for fight cues and see a flash instead. A "generic" D.C. "Street Man" once told me "Anybody who starts a fight deserves to be shot." Whoa, that's extreme, but that was his belief ... he was otherwise a -very- peaceful guy. Remember what I said about the Samurai. It's starting to drive me nuts. See you in the sticks, Dale www.kalieskrima.com ------------------------------ From: Saturbo@aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 11:19:51 EST Subject: eskrima: Batman Defending against a full-powered strike with a baseball bat is indeed a very dangerous proposition. Blocking such a strike in most cases would be an exercise in futility. Most systems (including my training in Serrada Eskrima) would teach either getting inside the "danger zone" of the weapon (as most of you have wisely suggested) or perhaps a pass and parry outside the arc of the weapon, allowing you to work on the aggressor's outside for your control and attack techniques. As students of eskrima, we are trained to deal with such situations every day. The principles of defending against a strike along angles #1, #2 or #3 (the likely paths of a baseball bat) are applied the same in the life or death situation against our bat-wielding friend as they would be against our training partner wielding a rattan stick. A bat is quite a bit more menacing than rattan, however so is a bolo or other heavy, edged weapon for that matter. My point is, that once we allow the fact that our attacker is wielding such an imposing weapon affect our thinking, we have already forfeited much of the advantages gained from our training in eskrima (or any martial art for that matter). We train for such situations. Among the many beauties of eskrima is that the very essence of the art is that we train with weapons so that we may apply the principles toward defending against similar weapons employed in similar attacks. Just some input on my behalf. Mabuhay Ang Eskrima! We had a nice news story here in Germany recently. A well known female german actor went for a walk with her dog. A Pitbull attacked her dog and wouldn't let go. When nothing else worked, she bit the pitbull in the rear and the pitbull let go. And for clarity I repeat: she bit. Big frontpage story in quite a few papers. I had to reread the headline twice myself. ------------------------------ From: Justo370@aol.com Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 14:35:38 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #29 In a message dated 1/19/00 10:01:38 AM Eastern Standard Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << From: "Jerry Bikendova" Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2000 07:13:00 GMT Subject: eskrima: Re: Silat, etc. >> What would you suggest doing to someone who has just disrespected you and your girlfriend/wife by patting her on the ass?
