I agree that the main objective is to keep you and your family out of harms way. And if that means walking away from a confrontation unharmed, so be it. Pride and selfishness are the roots of all evil. When we can overcome this, then we can truly call ourselves "martial warriors", because we will not have to prove anything. In addition, we must use our skills (i.e., gifts) to shut-down any confrontation that cannot be avoided with words or just walking away. That is one of the reasons we train (or should train) in the martial arts --- to defend ourselves, our loved ones, and the weak. That's my "two (2) cents". To all: keep training hard, but with a spirit of maintaining peace, harmony and justice. ------------------------------ From: Rocky Pasiwk Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 22:16:02 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Words to live by Roan Writes: > I think American society has forgotten that > ultimately, parents are responsible for their children being good people, > not someone else. > Amen, these words should be imprinted on the very top of every child's birth certificate, or on our monetary notes. I was attempting self deprecating humor (obviously very poorly) by stating I'll never get my instructorship under him. I was acknowledging the fact that I don't always express myself clearly and although I always have the best intentions sometimes it comes out all wrong and rubs people( in general and on the list) the wrong way. 2)I further attempted humor when I said I got my instructorship from guro balicki because I could kick butt. I in no way meant that he didn't hold the same virtues as guro Dan. There is no question that guro balicki would never consider even teaching someone who was a a-hole or any other adjective ascribed to someone of questionable integrity ect. There is a common bumper sticker, which I thought everyone has seem and would recognize that reads - "confusion is the minds reaction to over ride the bodies desire to choke the ... out of someone who desperately need it". I thought I would use a little play on words and in my own humorous way work that saying into a point I was trying to make - I had little success - I was just trying to point out that guro balicki system was more like a university - and he places more emphases on ability - as does many systems which test your knowledge and ability and will only promote you if you pass a test. This doesn't mean that he doesn't care about character - that is his first, foremost, and most important test. But since he knows me and I can explain myself in person better than over the net, I have passed that test a long time ago, and I guess I just forgot how important it is to him. with guro Dan, he makes a point repeating his expectations for self improvement (spirituality) during his classes - so that's why I think he placed a slightly higher value on it. thanx for the opportunity to explain myself and i hope this clears up any misunderstanding anyone may have gotten Steve ------------------------------ From: Joshua Hutchinson Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 00:57:26 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: Re: Morality and such... Greetings! Here's my 2 beads worth on morality/philos. views in the FMA's: Morals and philosophy are fine and dandy before and after a fight, but not during... When you're in a survival situation, you need to focus on the situation at hand- it's time to let your natural instincts take control. Morals will be the last thing on your mind when a freak with the razor blade taped to his hand is chasing you down the street! Oh, I could ramble on forever about this one, but you all know what I'm talking about, right? It's all part of the cycle of life... Without darkness, there wouldn't be any light. Hmm, I'm drifting... Violence, anger, loss of self control. These are personal character flaws and decisions. A jerk who starts taking MA just becomes a trained jerk. Morality and good conduct are a result of years of good upbringing and life experiences, not from MA classes. The result is not just formidable fighters, but people who are formidable in all parts of their life - business, intellectual, etc. It also results in a tight-knight brotherhood of warriors with a mutual air of respect for their kindred who live by the same code. I highly respect all Inayan Guros, even those I have never met, because I know what type of person and what type of fighter they must be to hold that position. >> Nicely put.
