On the old SNL's (Saturdau Night Live), Gilda Radner played a character (Rosanne Rosannadanna) who would go off on a long and pretty damnned funny tirade about some topic, only later to realize that she had mis-understood one of the crucial words in the topic of discussion, to which she would reply "Oh, never mind..." The naval-navel thing was a perfect opportunity for a rosannadanna'ish embellishment. Sometimes humor just doesn't carry well in text-only situations. Without inflection, certain things are just lost. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth, Drew __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Hi kids ;) I need some help in determining the next stage in contra-sumbrada...my Sifu tells me there are about 47 million different drills :D, and he can't always remember them all, so if anyone can fill in the next one for me I'd appreciate it (or else refer me to a site or something that will give me some more info). We get into ruts of doing the same thing for a while, and I need a new step...this is how far i've gotten: Cycle 1 Person AAngle 1(inward diagonal downward strike to shoulder/neck joint)Person B roof block B - Angle 1 A - Roof Block A - Angle 1 B - Roof Block cycle 2 A - angle 1 B - Roof Block B - angle 1 A - Inside Sweep Deflection A - angle 4 B - Drop Stick Deflection cycle 3 A - angle 1 B - roof block B - angle 1 A - inside sweep defl. A - angle 4 B - low wing block cycle 4 - ???????????? (anyone?) Sifu gives us other things to play with also, and info sheets etc, but he also encourages us to work things out for ourselves and see what works best for us. He's also rilly rilly busy, and not as organized as he'd like to be, so he does rely on us to help develop curriculum. And sometimes there's just stuff he hasn't done or seen in a while, so we play memory -joggers ( i recently did this with some of the palisut knife flows -"teacher teacher look what i worked out from pictures" "ah yes, haven't seen that in a while" and then he flowed into it as if he'd been doing it the day before :) Myself and the other senior Roaring Girl play around with these and the box pattern sumbrada, trying out different angles of attack, thrusts, defenses etc., and develop our own drill-type sequences. any help appreciated, thanks! :) jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: "gary" Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 00:56:40 +0800 Subject: eskrima: New Double stick Sparring MPEG Dear List member, I have put new double stick free sparring MPEG on my page, please feel free to download and comments. Hubud is a training tool not necessarily a fighting technique. It is taught at many different levels depending on where you want to take it is where you go with it. Hubud can be done soft like a chi sao type of drill as Ted Lukaylukay shows in his videos or harder as Paul Vunak does it focusing more on the strikes in his video series. Hubud is ,as Crafty said, a "generator" for one of the most common angles in FMA. It can also be adapted to any angles that fall into th *asterick*. This is where creativity and "homework" comes in. Self-descovery. With sumbrada, as another training tool, I feel it is a nice vehicle, especially after you have actually fought so that it can become more realistic. The first time I did sumbrada after I fought, I had to stop a few times and say "OK, I don't think that is realistic, let's try it again". James and I have done sumbrada slow and sped it up fast enough to where it is "ALMOST" fighting. Almost being the kew word. Using sumbrada you can work clinching, crashing, takedowns, evading back to unleash power shots before closing, etc. Your own creativity is your limit. BTW, people can check out the section on drills at wwwhelper.com/sigarta/chad.htm (no . between www and helper) Kalani right about our instructor not just taking in anyone into the class. We all had to prove our sincerity and character. He didn't take just anyone. He also desn't teach on a curriculum, just makes sure everyone knows the basics, but the class is always open to questions, which he sure loves to awnser (why not just do this;1). This weekend some DA almost ran me off the road because of some irresponsible driving while I had my daughter in the car with me, and not proud of myself, but the protective instinct showed very aggresively. On the same not a lady did the same last week, I think by mistake and I was by myself, interestingly I did not become so angry, upset but not angry enough to provoke a situation, probably because the protective instinct was not as strong. In my progression in FMA and life, I too have felt this step. There was a point where I feared to get into a fight because I didn't want to kill someone and go to jail. Being a "blade" oriented art, I always carry a knife and if somthing happened the Filipino Culture says "pull your knife, when he punches, defang the snake and heaven 6". Eventually you progress where you know what kind of situation calls for what kind of situation. It is an area I feel not many instructorsspeak about with the students. American culture is different than Filipino (although sometimes I still wish that we lived in a society where we could issue duel challenges). This weekend some security guard told my wife she had a fine ass, and much as I thought about it, I didn't rearange his face, I called the owner of the company and let him know what kind of employee was working there. Stupid 18 year old kid. But you better believe that if he grabbed her ass while she was standing right next to me, he would have seen the Philippine Fighting Arts up close and personal. If the guy will do that while the boyfriend is standing there, he obviously doesn't have any concern for himself. He will get what he deserves. But I never snap at guys who look, fustrating as it may be even when the looks are a bit too long. Love strong and fight hard. I am thinking about buying a video or videos on the staff. I am aware that Kelly Worden has 2 videos, and Panther Video has some, I was wondering if anyone had other ideas or sources for staff videos? I am looking for videos on Filipino or Indonesian methods, even Hwarang-Do methods would be good. Also, has anyone seen Kelly Worden's staff (Sibat Long Pole) videos? If so, what was your opinion of them. Thank you. Let me save you a bundle. Here's basically what you see: A variety of combination techniques based on autonomics; the theory that each strike to each target will cause a certain predictable physical reaction in your opponent, enabling you to set up the next strike. If you're a reasonably educated fighter, which many on this list serve are, I would think you would recognize the problem with this theory. While it may work some of the time, the big question is "What if you miss?" Actually, people from the San Soo system of kung-fu have related that basically all Peterson teaches is the first few belt rank curriculums from that style. A HUGE problem is that never once do you see Peterson or his students covering their heads when practicing. There is absolutely no on guard position in this system. Granted, one should be able to fight out of a natural stance in order to gain the element of surprise, but nobody will ever convince me that learning to shield any part of your body in defense is not absolutely necessary. Really, the only useful techniques I found were take downs like kenjat siko and some dumog style techniques, which of course I later learned once I started FMA. If you already have experience in FMA, I would doubt that you need any of it. Hope that helps.
