(which I read were very expensive) I would agree with what Matt said, and the biggest problem I had was "what if the person doesn't react to the hit like your training partner is trained to react?" From what I understood, your training partner is supposed to react in a certain way to simulate a specific anatomical response that "all" people will do when hit. Hmmm.... Ever giving someone everything you had in a specific technique to have them look back at you with a "what was that?" kind of look? That's when you go "Oh S@#T and try something else, like running as fast as you can to the nearest tank dealer, use it to shoot him or run him over. That was my biggest problem with the tapes. Most of the basic techniques he teaches are found in other martial arts, and will work if practiced and done properly. I also don't care for the ads that say by watching a set of videos you will be able to go out and be prepared for any encounter. TRS is famous for them, and Peterson's are similar. Watch my tape and beat SEALs at hand to hand. Right. Videos can be a good tool for learning, I have a Hapkido video out with Paladin Press myself, but only if you take what is taught in the video and practice, practice and train and train. I have seen the SCARS system also. The autonomic theory is sound...if it is used like the multiple strikes of Kenpo that I learned. As a matter of fact, SCARS looks alot like the fundamental techniques I learned early in the Kenpo system. The answer to the "what if you miss?" question gets answered better in Kenpo, and FMA I think, because you layer your strikes so that the continuous motion keeps the opponent on the defense. THat way if you miss, you are already rolling into the next strike. Some people use the term Kenpo overkill (or "overskill"). SCARS is still too robotic if you do miss though. As far as I understand, SCARS is primarily packaged as a military hand to hand system. The lack of guard or fighting stances is based on the idea that there will be a bum rush and a furball of a fight, not a dueling type fight. THat's as far as my understanding goes. It is pretty rough if you are good at it, but I think that it is too distilled from it's artistic roots. Does anyone have recommendations on schools to visit/train at? Regarding Schools in Wisconsin, Jun Davantes used to be a member of this list, maybe still is. Jun is a good person to contact directly for leads on places in WI( and a heck of a nice guy). Contact me directly and I will see if it's OK to forward your request to him. In Detroit the other day a guy went into Micky D's up on 8-mile road to complain about his order, and the employee preceded to beat the hell out of the guy, who screamed for help, which as a rule of thumb in Detroit you don't ever want to do, which held true to form in his case. Shortly after screaming for help the manager came out from the office and started kicking the guy in the face. I thought this was a bunch of B.S but apparently it really happened. Its rumored that the guy who initially started beating the guy, was heard saying ( as he was punching the guy ) this ain't F##King Burger King MOFO you get it our way or no way!!! HHMMM what ever happen to the good old days when the cook would just spit on your food if you complained. Doc Fung Wrote something about Dr's and seminars which I pretty much agree with but at least they were Dr's before they went to the seminar, that is right isn't it Doc? ( I am not being a smart ass here ) Please don't tell me that they weren't Dr's first!! Or are you just kidding? On another note Doc, since we haven't communicated in a while, you know it always struck me funny you being a Dentist and an Instructor. As a student I wouldn't know weather to feel safe knowing that if you ever slipped you'd be able to fix my teeth. Or, would I be a little paranoid, I mean if time's got a little slow at the office, a slip of the stick here, a mis-judged punch there, and in no time you could have an office full of patients. :-) and here's food for thought ( I usually charge for business advise ) :-) the next time Crafty has one of his get together, I am sure he hands out flyers of something , at least he should. You should get the exclusive rights from him to advertise on the other side, Can't you just see it, on one side " DB martial arts invites you to experience Real stick fighting and what not. ANd on the other side "Present this flyer and receive 25% off your first visit to Doc Fungs Dental clinic". Man I crack myself up!!! Well since then they aired something else on martial arts and are getting ready to do another story and we are still not represented. If everyone would just write a little e-mail explaining their disappointment that we were neglected in their report, then save the e-mail and every other day or so e-mail them over and over again until they get sick of us. And if Ray would inform them of his digest, and how many people it represents and that many of those represented have anywhere from 2 to 200 students, and again re-send it every other day or so. Maybe we'd get some recognition. Who cares which style of FMA or who they feature as long as they do it. And Crafty maybe you could wright one of those really fancy and important sounding letters, you know the kind where simple folk like me don't understand what the hell your saying but it sure sounds good, and impressive. And send it over and over irritate the hell out of them till they give in. He told me in his own very diplomatic way that he truly believes in trapping and Hubad. The problem (he said) comes when some people think it is going to come out in combat the way you train it, it's not. He told me that it comes out fragmented, in small pieces. He said what they don't understand is, it's just a drill, like jumping rope. Are you going to go into a fight and use the attributes you received from jumping rope? Yes! Are you going to go into a fight and jump rope? I don't think so. I remember in the past talking to Guro Dan about the time he spent at the Dallas Cowboy's training camp. I remember him talking about Randy White (an offensive line man on the Cowboy's). Randy had credited over 15 of his sacks to Guro Dan's Hubad. Getting past defensive line men can't be that easy, I know that football is not combat, but Hubad did prove it self useful.
