The stuff we see on TV is just the tip of an iceberg. I don't know how much worse it will get before it gets better, if it ever does. We will all think a good thought for your uncle. Patrick N. Wishing him a full recovery, even if it looks bleak now. You are so right, it is very F$#@. You are also right about the awareness, a good friend of mine's dad was killed in a bar parking lot with an iron pipe to the head one night. (ambushed from behind). I'm planning on going to the Philippines(Cebu) in August. Has anyone on this Digest run into any problems bringing sticks, swords, and balisongs back to the US? Are there any procedures/regulations that I should know about? I know I'm asking the question kind of early, but I'm curious. Obviously, I am particularily interested in the fighting uses of it. It is truly a shame that people responsible for such acts are indeed out there. In your post you stated that awareness is the first step in self defense and I couldn't agree with you more. It reminds me of a situation that my then fiance (now wife) and myself found ourselves in several years ago. At that time I had perhaps two or more years of intense pencak silat and kali training and was on track to make guru. Since then I've had to devote more time to other responsibilities and have unfortunately been less able to train, but that's another story. So, my wife and I were walking from a hotel in Downtown Detroit to a restaurant in Greektown (about a two mile walk) at about 1:00 am and we had to walk through some fairly shady areas. Granted it was not a good idea to walk through that part of town so late at night with a woman in tow but we did it nonetheless. My awareness was tweaked. About half a city block away from us I see a man peek from around the corner of a building and look in our direction. We were walking toward him. My wife did not see the man and it was obvious that he was doing his best to avoid being seen. As we got closer I repositioned to place myself between my wife and this man that was waiting in the shadows. We arrive at the mans location and sure enough the guy pops out and asks us for the time. Keep in mind that it is 1:00 am in the middle of nowhere downtown. There is no real reason for this guy to know the exact time. I knew it was a ploy to "steal my awareness." He likely wanted me to pull up my sleeve and look at my watch at which point I would have likely been clobbered. It frightens me to think what could have happened to my wife if that had happened. In any case I've locked my eyes on this guy and I have the base of my hand lightly resting on the but of my 4 inch tanto voyager. I gave him no opportunity to catch me unaware. I tell him we do not have the time. He asks for a cigarette still trying to "steal my awareness". I tell him we have none. We back away and continue on our journey and he begins to follow us from a distance. I made it obvious that we knew he was stalking us and after a couple of blocks he vanished. Now the whole point is that this was a guy out for easy money. He didn't want to fight. He didn't want to get hurt. Lets face it, most muggers, or whatever you call them, are not interested in getting in a fight or risking serious injury. If they have the impression that there is no way they will get your money by taking you by suprise they would rather wait for the next easy prey then to risk being stomped by an attentive and aware individual. Although I had the skills (and weaponry to assist) to defend my wife and myself, the real weapon that saved us that night was my AWARENESS. ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 11:37:20 -0000 Subject: eskrima: that B. I asked him what he meant and although others have touched it its fair to see his reply. Please remember that I don't represent or have anything to do with Burton. I just had his mail address so asked him straight. pat Aberdeen Martial Arts Group -----Original Message----- From: Burton Richardson [SMTP:jkdu@hotmail.com] Hi Patrick, You can post this on the Eskrima Digest if you wish. I put my trust in things that have been PROVEN to work under HIGH STRESS and FULL RESISTANCE! Look at my old tapes. I taught variations of Hubad that had never been on tape before, and I believed that these things would improve attributes. They do improve attributes for energy drills, but not for fighting against an opponent who is fighting back against you as hard as he can. This will not make sense unless people spend a lot of time sparring against competitive athletes. I wish everyone the best, and I hope that they can all put the "styles" behind and research their own experiences through fighting.
