Milburn, Ph.D." Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 14:08:04 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Kamagong self-defense, Applegate-Fairbairn Greetings to all on ED. I am a "lurker" who has been around for a few months, and I am very new to FMA. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to read the views and opinions of those who contribute to ED. I have a couple of questions I'd like to ask: First, what does anyone know about Kamagong self-defense, and would it be worth investing in the book and tape by Master Ricardo Sebastian? Second, what would you consider the most useful written source of information on the Applegate-Fairbairn methods of non-firearm fighting? (I hope this second question is not too far afield.) Thanks, Mr. Terry, for putting ED together. Milo Milburn ------------------------------ From: Bladewerks@aol.com Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 14:26:43 EST Subject: eskrima: Modern Arnis Anyos Ed, The first two Anyos are quite standard and simple.I traveled around taking Remy's seminar's for about 5 years.I must confess however that when it came to the Anyo's I was very turned off.It seemed more like Karate with a stick.Same kinda footwork and pattern's.Not that there is anything wrong with Karate but it just aint for me.I memorized up to about Anyo 4 or 5 i think then I just coulndt take it anymore and decided to forget about trying to train them, and focus on all the other stuff.Maybe it was my loss, but I just cant stand doing Kata.Of corse this totally knocked me out for any kind of Rank advancement. But that wasnt the reason i was into Arnis anyhow. I will say however that everything else I've seen Remy do is right on.I dont know where the concept of "Arnis Kata" came from, perhaps someone here on the forum would like to answer that question. I was told it is not in the safest of 'hoods. He made two video's put out by Unique. The second in the series deals with weapons. The guy I am learning from is a student of >mine who use to train under a gentleman named Kalindi (sp). The shield >thing really has me going and I can't wait to fight with it. GM Abner Pasa's country rep. in South Africa has trained with the Zulu and other native fighting arts, and when we have sparred in the past, has often included some very interesting variations into the mix. One particular favorite of his is a technique which comes from the weapon that is a stick with a ball (rock, chunk of wood, etc.) on the end of it, I can't remember what it is called. He has a disconcerting habit of coming directly over the top when in close and the ball will hit the back of the head. He has his sheild side towards me (left side), so the weapon hand is actually well behind his own head. Since he is taller than I am by several inches, this is impossible to block in any normal fashion. Requires some agressive footwork to get away/avoid. Since the posts on the sjambok, I have asked him for more info on more of the S.A. stick and flexible weapons. Coming soon...
