I was in the Philippines last June. I brought back an antique Barong from Zamboanga (if you go there buy it from Moros. The tourist stores sell junk). This is a very nice sword for only 4300.00 pesos, or about $119.00. I also brought back 7 balisongs, 1 tool quality bolo, and 4 decorative krises. I had no problem bringing anything back. In the Filipino airports they will seal your luggage with weapons with tape. I got trough American customs quickly. I told them I had swords and they said ok. They were more concerned if you were carrying mangos or other fruit. There is a $400.00 limit to what you can bring in tax free, but that is not even strickly enforced all the time, but just in case make sure you save all of your recipts, and ask for a written one if the seller doesn't have any. When looking for balisongs, alternate words used are Batangas Knife and fan knife. As for some of the other suggestions, I STRONGLY advise against carrying a plastic knife. In the Philippines they frisk you before getting on a plane. A pen or a mini maglight is fine. Also, the summertime is hot and humid, but it is the off season for tourism, so lots of resorts charge only half the price. Wierdly, at EVERY airline checkpoint, when they opened up my luggage, security was VERY interested in my military-style belt first aid kit. They acted like they have never seen one before, and all of they just had to empty the entire thing, and since those are packed tight it was a hassle to repack. So buy a junk kit from Wal mart or something and repack it with real supplies. Ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Yaman pay ta adda ka nga tumulong kanyak (thank you Sir!). In many Ilukano systems, pamaayan ti Iluko, "El Estilyo Matador" is deemed as one of the highest levels of training, reserved for only the most advanced of students. As evidenced by the great Santiago Toledo, a "Matador" and posseser of the "galing-galing", his fighting methods and feats in the "Korida" are legendary. > at the Inosanto academy we - refer to each side by the bulon line (the > heaven line) with is left to right in either direction although it usally > starts high left to low right, then back up- and audlaw line (the earth > line) right side to left. again either direction however usally starts low > left to upper right. A very enlightening post Sir. It is always interesting to learn of the different applications found at the Inosanto Academy. In the Sarakan arts of Ilukos, the application of the sarwag slash/strike is much like that in the Hirada system when defending against the Kasadores. It is delivered from "tabascan", originating from the hip, terminating with the weapon in "dukol"(edge up) at the korona (top of the head), which then allows for the usage of "putolan" (decapitation techniques). In the "Saranget methods" (guerilla warfare style) however there is no follow up downward slash/strike which is the natural tendency after sarwag delivery, due impart to the usage of the "gerger" (circular stepping) and "isaral" (continous stepping) the foot movement in Saranget. A downward slash using this footwork will off balance the fighter. There is also the contending for the "baluti" (spaniards breastplate) which when struck on a downward plane can also hinder further movement. The "X" is often an offensive counter defensive movement from the Cinco Tero methods and denotes a whole different type of footwork condusive to and for one on one dueling (e.g.) "tatsulok" (triangular) or "magna ti pakulakdang" (long stepping), etc, foot movement designed to induce superior downward striking/slashing power. The sarwag as used in this region of the Philippines postulates that upon completion of the terminating move (bigsak), the weapon, be it buneng, kumpay or porra must rechamber back to tabascan, to sarwag allowing for a non stop continuous attack, "matansa" against multiple opponents. Sarwag then in theory is the beginning and the end and the beginning of every technique. I just finished several hours working with Pappy Dog (Nick Papadakis of Kombat Instruments Ltd-- the stick source for the Hermosa Clan of the Dog Brothers) on the edit of the first two tapes in the second Dog Brothers series. Tape One will be "The Grandfathers Speak": Dedicated to some of the men who brought the art to America and elsewhere, this tape will consist mostly of interviews with various Grandfathers of the Art from the archives of Dog Brothers Inc. Martial Arts. None of these interviews have ever been seen before. Some of them will be illustrated with very rare or never before seen footage of them in action. The bulk of these interviews were shot at the first WEKAF nationals in the Fall of 1998 and the tape will be structured around in context of that day but there will be other interviews as well. Off the top of my somewhat bleary head appearing from that day will be: Diony Canete; Sam Tendencia, Angel Cabales, Narrie Babao, , and Ben Largusa. This is the order in which they were shot-- in other words please do not read anything into the order. The names of the other Grandfathers appearing in the video is not yet final. Members of the Dog Brothers Martial Arts Association will be receiving this video for free. Tape Two will be a light edit of the most recent Gathering of the Pack. Woof, Crafty Dog PS: Pappy Dog asked me to tell the List that the K.I.L. hard drive crashed and he lost everyone's e-mail address etc and asks that everyone interested PLEASE send him an e-mail at Nick@bloodsport.com Thanks. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2000 15:51:58 -0800 (PST) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #58 *************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
