George Darish, a Buti Nigara Guru who sub-leases space from me, has shown me a few techniques and I notice they quite often use a two handed sweep type block, which is a major fundamental of Palis Palis. along with the forward type of stance and attack. Obviously the FMA's and the Indonesian arts have greatly influenced each other. I just really notice the similarities between these 2 arts, their so similar its like Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do. I have never met anyone else that does Palis Palis, other than the Modern Arnis guys who have a couple of moves and often think Palis Palis is a technique and not an art. any forth coming info would be appreciated. Willy started teaching here in Beaver Co. Pa in 1956. Willy used to teach out of a national guard barracks in New Brighton Pa. I started in Pukalan in the 1981 to about 1983 and my instructor was a student then instructor under Willy Wetzel. My former instructor and I still talk and he stops in my school periodically and we talk about the new instructors and he just laughs. From what my instructor told us Willy Wetzell was a very humble man with blazing speed. Willy was killed by his son with nunchucks and a samurai sword. The watered down students now are cashing in on the names of other indonisian styles that they dont know, also I recently had a 20yr old pukalan stylist at our school working out and sparring. His father is a self proclaimed Mas master ) and the son said he is an instructor in 3 Indonisian styles. Well we worked out and what the son showed me was nothing that I learned from my legitimate instructor. I have attended Guru Inosantos seminars, Guru Mike Inay, Sifu Larry Hartsells, Professor Remy Presas, Cass Magda, Burton Richardson, and Pendekar Paul DeThours and belive me what I saw out his indonisian styles looked nothing like any indonisian influence I ever saw. Most of Willys original students dont teach anymore or teach private classes, Then are the ones who are about 5th or 6th generation that lost the whole style some how. Well getting back to the 20yr old he said he could not be taken down, well he was and tapped out 3 times. Then he wanted to show me Pukalans stick fighting well it was very basic FMA and really he sucked but the new Pukulan people are telling there students its Pukalan. I am by no means a bad ass or someone who bashes other styles but I have been around enough to know what I am talking about. Also Willy Spelled it Peokolan, Now around here its Pukalan, Pent Jak Silat ( as spelled in his ad in the phone book) and the list goes on. So if you really want to study Willy Wetzells style find a relable instructor. Not some 20yr old or self proclaimed Mas that thinks he knows everything and really knows nothing. ------------------------------ From: abass@iname.com Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 09:39:12 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inosanto Books You can find links to an online version and a downloadable version of "The Filipino Martial Arts" at: http://www.geocities.com/kalipages ashley ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All the busy little creatures Chasing out their destinies Living in their pools They soon forget about the sea... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~N.P.~~~ ------------------------------ From: "L. I've worn the pocket clips so much they've bent or worked themselves loose. The customer relationship Les de Asis & his wife have with customers is outstanding. Because of warranty, I just paid for the shipping on their replacements at no charge. Just run down to the nearest Cutlery store or Knife Show & check them out. You can only sit in the drivers seat, but not actually go for a "test drive"(thank God). This'll give you a "feel" for your individual preference. Some like heavy bastons, some like lighter, some like Bahi & Kamagong, while others prefer yantok or Lexan. Shall we add to the mix: long or short, thicker or narrower (get your minds outta the gutter people)... you get the gist. Les de Asis & his company have been very friendly & helpful to myself & my colleagues over the years. Thank God their Balisongs are coming back! The tactical knife landscape is booming, no doubt to the many FMA practioners who are designing their own & influencing the designs of so many well known & long term knifemakers (e.g. the late Al Mar, Allen Elishewitz, Cold Steel... The FMA is still making a significant contribution & lasting impression in the Knife manufacturing industry. Not only in its design, but largely in the application of mankind's primitive tool. Ay Pare Dave Reyes, always the source & bounty of knowledge. Now others can gain from your vast experience & resources. FMA Glossary 2?
