It is actually more of a silat/kuntao type of art that relies heavily on two handed reinforced type of blocking . Their is a very old Filipino Man here in Michigan, goes by the name of Pat. I have about 2 years training under him privately about 10 years ago. Remy will say that Palis Palis, and Crossada are not arts, even though he and I trained quite heavily in them, why he does this I have no idea. Remy and I got into a very bad argument years ago over this very subject. All I know is that Pat Balboa, ( no relation to Miguel Balboa, of PT ) is to this day one of the best empty hand FMA'ers I have ever worked with, and he taught them as complete arts. Many a master claim their art translates to the empty hand but few really do!!! I did think ( just personal preferences ) that the weapon training in these arts was a little week. I have not heard from Master Balboa in years he moved one day with out telling anyone, and leaving no forward address, he would be in his late 80s now. If anyone on the list has any info on him I would greatly appreciated it. Why have we not seen East Indian wrestlers like Gama in NHB????? I mean he dominated all the catch as catch can guys like Zybisco and the like. Everyone ducked him as he was undefeated. I just thought with the world wide coverage of Free Fighting and the internet,...there would be some Indian wrestlers in Pride or UFC. Willy started teaching here in Beaver Co. Pa in 1956. Willy used to teach out of a national guard barracks in New Brighton Pa. I started in Pukalan in the 1981 to about 1983 and my instructor was a student then instructor under Willy Wetzel. My former instructor and I still talk and he stops in my school periodically and we talk about the new instructors and he just laughs. From what my instructor told us Willy Wetzell was a very humble man with blazing speed. Willy was killed by his son with nunchucks and a samurai sword. The watered down students now are cashing in on the names of other indonisian styles that they dont know, also I recently had a 20yr old pukalan stylist at our school working out and sparring. His father is a self proclaimed Mas master and the son said he is an instructor in 3 Indonisian styles. Well we worked out and what the son showed me was nothing that I learned from my legitimate instructor. I have attended Guru Inosantos seminars, Guru Mike Inay, Sifu Larry Hartsells, Professor Remy Presas, Cass Magda, Burton Richardson, and Pendekar Paul DeThours and belive me what I saw out his indonisian styles looked nothing like any indonisian influence I ever saw. Most of Willys original students dont teach anymore or teach private classes, Then are the ones who are about 5th or 6th generation that lost the whole style some how. Well getting back to the 20yr old he said he could not be taken down, well he was and tapped out 3 times. Then he wanted to show me Pukalans stick fighting well it was very basic FMA and really he sucked but the new Pukulan people are telling there students its Pukalan. I am by no means a bad ass or someone who bashes other styles but I have been around enough to know what I am talking about. Also Willy Spelled it Peokolan, Now around here its Pukalan, Pent Jak Silat ( as spelled in his ad in the phone book) and the list goes on. So if you really want to study Willy Wetzells style find a relable instructor. Not some 20yr old or self proclaimed Mas that thinks he knows everything and really knows nothing. ______________________________________________________________________ >Politics, style or system pride, ego, small mind syndrome... etc. >All of the elements of stupidity at work here. >Let's all move on... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "Raphael Chiu" Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000 17:33:52 -0600 Subject: eskrima: RE: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #63 Hi Paul, A Filipino friend of mine trains under Guro Dave Hatch in the Farmington Hills, MI area, I believe (right next door to you!). She seemed pretty happy the last time we spoke. He teaches JKD, Muay Thai, FMA, and TKD, plus some more. Otherwise, there is a Silat place under a Pendekar Bresar (maybe Besar?) at a school called "Golden Dragon" or "Celestial Dragon" in the same area. The website is something like "www.penjak-silat.com" Please try any variation in the spelling or the spacing, underscore, or dashes between the "penjak" and the "silat." Sorry this is so vague, I hope this helps. Good Luck!
