Anderson" Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2000 13:05:09 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Benchmade vs Cold steel knives I have been carrying benchmade, spyderco and coldsteel knives of various designs for years. I currently have a Benchmade AFCK, CQC-7 and a stryker. Of all these blades I like the afck and cqc-7 the best, but the stryker leaves a lot to be desired. I have a spyderco civilian and endura, the civilian is a good knife for silat training and applications aka karambit. the endura is a good utility tool. But, I have a Columbia river knife and tool/Kit Carson M16-14 with a 50/50 blade. This thing is awesone as it is as fast in opening as a balisong or an auto. Kit has a reputation for designing/building a exceptional tool and the M16-14 shows that this is true. This knife has a finger flicker that comes to the index finger when drawing the knife for use. The blade also has a thumb knob for those who are more prone to this type of opening. But the M16-14 is the Primo of the knife world at the present time (IMO) and to make things even better. the price is less than an afck or any of the blades by benchmade, so you get quality as well as a decent price. The M16 comes in several designs with a tanto blade of almost 4 inches, it also comes in sizes of less length and is currently coming out with the Zytel handles that sell for a little less than the full metal version with the titanium inserts. The instructor, Guru Besar Davidson, has trained in Indonesia and the Philipines, has competed in the Philipines (stickfighting), learned much of his silat from an aged Indonesian and is currently the recognized Director of the Pekiti-Tirsia Global Organization for the Mid-Weastern states. >> I don't know about Davidson's Pekiti Tirsia ... never seen him do it. However, for Silat, I would recommend David Hatch or Chris Malgeri (Canton/Madison Heights areas). Both of these guys also have Kali and Jun Fan/JKD (as well as some Shoot, Muay Thay, etc). They are both under Dan Inosanto (though I'm not sure of their respected levels) and they are both in the Jagabaya program under Herman Suwanda (again, not sure of their specific levels). As for Davidson's having trained under an "aged Indonesian," my understanding is that his primary Silat training is from William Sanders who is neither "aged" nor Indonesian. Now, I could be wrong, he may have trained under another Silat instructor too ... I don't know. These are just my personal opinions ... if I were in the Detroit area of Michigan, I would train with Chris Malgeri or David Hatch. However, don't take my word for it ... go check out all three and see which you prefer and that's probably where you need to be :-) Regards, Mike - -- An expert is a person who avoids small errors as he sweeps on to the grand fallacy. -- Benjamin Stolberg __________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Get your FREE Internet Access and Email at http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html ------------------------------ From: "*" Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 20:41:19 -0800 Subject: [none] i had my voyager in my back pocket and when i sat down the clip snapped - but cold steel replaced the knife no problem, no questions -- i'd just call up - and make arrangements steve ------------------------------ From: "Al \"Got This Fish On The Move\"" Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 08:10:58 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Off-Topic: Inside Kung Fu CD I'm interested in obtaining a copy of the Inside Kung Fu Magazine CD that was available about 2 years ago. The company retro-fitted a steel clip at no charge. Just another factor to consider. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 07:57:39 -0800 (PST) Subject: [none] ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #66 *************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
