Fung, D.D.S." Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 20:09:01 -0800 Subject: eskrima: SB revisited No the SB is not a chain of "pushing" punchs! Each punch is designed to impart as much energy into the target as possible and "drop" the target so you do not have to chase it. If the target is going backward so that you have to chase him you are doing it wrong. When improperly done the opponant is pushed and you have to use footwork to keep up with a retreating opponant. This is the main reason why the SB is so ineffective. People do not understand the mechanics of its use and then condemn it. When done properly and with understanding of the goal the final finish is assured. The reason people do not understand this is they don't spar it. Do this for your homework this weekend and see for yourselves. The SB target is not one point unless someone is not using it properly. Most use the SB as a way to hopefully control the range and throw out crap in one's face. What they do not realize is that they already control the range by footwork such that they can employ the SB properly. This goes back to Dale's point... you don't SB from accross the room! That's why they call it "boxer's fracture". A lot of old-style martial arts taught hitting with the open hand to the head. And there is a reason that bare-knuckle boxers used the back fist, the hammer fist, and the flicker jab a lot. They didn't ruin their livelihood that way. Cthulhu gave us opposable thumbs so that we could hold things while we hit people in the head.... The SB is a series of strait punches down the centerline of your body, the hands going over one another. The punching fist passes directly over the returning fist, to be a SB several punches have to be throw this way creating a "circular motion" ( like a piston) directly in front of the body. Because of the "straitness" of the punches and coming from and returning to the centerline, the SB cannot be thrown from the standard JKD "on guard position" you must square up your shoulders to make both punches equal lengths. Like all attacks, the SB can be countered, but if used properly to "Bridging the gap" or enter. It can be very affective and harder to parry or counter then triangle punches, Jab, cross, hook..
