First, let me wish Rocky a speedy recovery and say all injuries suck. On that note, this is precisely the reason heel hooks are prohibited in tournament BJJ. Unlike straight foot locks, the pain starts after the injury, IOW it's hard to know when to tap and so, as Rocky found out, dangerous even to practice. To expand this to a more general plane, it is great to be tough and deadly, but, as all boxers know, not to leave your fight in the gym. He did not hear me come in and I did not hear anything from him until we surprised each other as I entered a room. In the resulting struggle, I hit him with a solid right to the head and broke two knuckles on my hand. My adrenaline was sky high, but as soon as my hand broke, it was like a bucket of cold water was thrown on me. It swelled up like a watermelon and I could not have used it again for any purpose. I'd say the above 80% figure is way too high, and I for sure did notice the damage immediately. Now if I had been on PCP or some other substance, who knows... However, a guy that I used to know was a parapalegic. He was completely paralyzed from the waist down. He had had some training, though, from a friend of his. His friend was, if I recall, a Ninjutsu guy ... but that's irrelevant. They played around with what Mark (my friend) would be able to pull off with his crutches (these are the aluminum kind with arm rests and peg handles). One night, Mark and I were in a bar. Mark had had some terse words with a guy earlier but had thought the situation was resolved. So, this guy comes over and kicks one of the crutches out from under Mark. I stood up and was about to go for the guy when all of a sudden, the guy vanishes. The next thing I see is this guy laying on the floor and Mark laying into him with the cane (the tip of the cane was in the guys groin and Mark was slamming it as hard and fast as he was able from the angle he was at). Now, talking to Mark later, he told me what he had done. When the crutch got kicked, he let go of it (or it came out of his hand). When he hit the ground, he was already "running" (figuratively speaking). He got hold of the crutch beneath the peg handle and managed to hook the guys leg with the peg and pull him down with it. Now, I don't know that this would have worked without the incredible upper body strength Mark had developed (mostly from walking around on crutches for 10 years). So, maybe the point is, take away your need for supporting yourself with your weapon. If you've got functioning legs, I would think that there would be even more you could do than what Mark did (i.e.: from the ground, hook his ankle with the cane and pull while kicking to his knee). Now, I'm speaking completely hypothetically (based on what I saw and talking to Mark) ... but at least it's something to consider :-) Regards, Mike - -- Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. -- Arthur C. During the summer months myself and the other Roaring Girls [hey,Hardcore Girl :-)] take to the park on weekends for extra training. It's also environmental training in that we have to deal with different types of terrain (grass, pavement) and different conditions (the heat, the wind, the sun in our eyes). We usually do basic stick drills (i.e sumbrada, numerada)but this year I would like to do some stick sparring. Does anyone have any suggestions for a "soft" stick, like something with a foam rubber covering? I've read a little about Jeff Finder's Stickman sticks, any opinions on these? Thanks in advance, Kim(a.k.a Thai Girl) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: "Gary A. Hudgins" Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 12:33:26 -0600 Subject: eskrima: What is the world coming to Two weeks ago I finished a case that I was appointed on. The boy (age 17 at the time) was charged with going into a store/home in the middle of the night and shooting the occupant and taking the money there. The victim was shot through the eye. She was in her 60's. A second individual was involved. My client always indicated that he was not the shooter, that the other guy (Suspect B) was the shooter. The problem is that six months before he was involved in a similar incident with a different suspect (Suspect A). This incident involved two people going in the home (forcing their way in the home ) and shooting and killing the husband and wife that lived there. The man was shot through the top of the head as he was told to lie on the floor. The wife was taken into the kitchen where her purse was and then shot through the back of the head. (My client had said that he was not the shooter in that case either.) The only problem was that the only common elements between the two cases was my client and the gun was probably the same gun used in both cases. (The gun was never found but there were enough similarity in the balistics that the States expert said the bullets were fired from the same gun.) Needless to say, after a week of trial, the jury recommended the death penalty. He still faces trial on the husband and wife murder in another county. Our local community has been plagued by several such incidents within the past year. An old lady was broken into and beaten to death. Her car was taken New Years Eve. The young boy, was found in her car with blood on him in the early morning hours only hours after she was killed. A lady near Wickesburg, had her out side lights broken out, her phone line cut. Someone broke in, ransacked her house and shot her. She was found dead the next day, gun shot wound to the face. They are still looking for the shooter. A real estate rental agent recently was shot in the head and his proceeds from rental property was taken. They are still looking for the shooter. Two high school girls, age 17 were found both shot in the head, dead in the truck of their car. They are still looking for the shooter. You might think that all these cases were done by the same person, but facts and circumstances indicate that each of these were done by different people. What happened to the days when you could tell your students, "If they are just after money, give it to them. No use risking your life over money" These people kill for the thrill????? What is this leading to. Learn weapon disarms. Learn them well. The elements we have out there are with out morals, without guilt, without any conscious what so ever. They act with no remorse. If someone breaks in on you in your home, knowing you are there, chances are he means to kill you. Might as well go for it and try to take him out first. (I am talking about cases where the perp breaks into your home, your business.)
