Hi, I am looking at fixed blades in the $50-100 price range. I am considering the Cold Steel Peace Keeper I/II., the Bokar Applegate boot knife, and the Bokar A-F mini Smatchet. The Cold Steels have a rep for delivering a very sharp blade, and I also like the forward weight of the mini Smatchet. Any other blades I should consider? Before someone recommends a Kukuri, I just recently got a Gurkha House Sirupiti, and I'm looking for a smaller more conventional fixed blade. Thanks in advance for any help! ~Kev ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 03:10:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: sparring gear WEKAF headgear is a good solid mask, but it can take too much of a hit that might give you bad habits. Wearing too much or too heavy gear gives you this sub-conscious bravado wether you think so or not. Even if you are "trying" to be realistic, I still think it is sub-conscious. This mask is also (if I'm not mistaken) close to $200.00, but if you're looking for a mask where you are not going to get hurt go with this one. Kombat Instruments (oh, yet another free plug, Nick) are also some very solid mask, however more realistic(it's the one that I first started with). You can get hurt, but probably not too bad, with this one. We have seen someone bleed after a solid shot. But other than that, it has gone through some smashing miles. My old mask is the one that the new fighters and students use. BTW, for(how does Crafty put it?)oh yea, "litigious fools", read the disclaimer on Kombat Instruments Limited, they are only supposed to be used for fencing. For the realism, you can go with lighter fencing mask although these are pretty hard to find(BTW, if anyone knows where I can pick up an old light mask, please let me know. I have no luck finding them on the web, and I've got the lightest one that any of the teachers here in Hawaii have.) All in all, it depends on what you want out of it. I say, buy it used first than when you know what you want, buy a new one if you want to. Elbow and knee pads can be either the hard plastic kind from City Mill or Eagles Hardware or the soft rubber mason, or volley ball type of knee pads. Once again, it depends on where you want to take it. Obviously you can take more of a hit with the hard plastic ones, and you obviously also learn to not get hit faster with the softer ones(or none). WEKAF gloves give you pretty good control and wrist mobility. Street hockey gloves are lighter that regular hockey and you can definitely fracture bones, knock back nails, and swell your hand up from good ol' power shots, whil the thick ice hockey gloves can take a beating and you pretty much only have to watch for those thumb shots. Look for used pairs, as the better you get, you might want to lighten up the gear as this can be costly to keep buying new gear. And when your ready for it, I like NIKE padded football linebacker gloves. You can definitely break and injure the hands if get hit, but the give you a nice protection from railing that fencing mask with your other fist. Good luck and I hope this helps. BTW, looking forward to the DBMA series tapes. ===== "Draw me not without reason, sheath me not without honor" Chad Hawaii __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
