Herrman" Date: Sun, 20 Feb 2000 13:41:13 -0500 Subject: eskrima: legality of self defense Hello, I've been following the thread on the legal issues involved in self defense with great interest. Shortly after I began studying MA in college I borrowed 2 books from Syracuse's law library titled: "American Law & The Trained Fighter" by Carl Brown & "The Law of Self Defense: Legal and Ethical Principles" by Irving J. Sloan. It was/is important for me to understand the basics of what my liability as a martial artist is in a self defense situation. It is important to my current instructor as well. One of the requirements that Guro Jason has set for me in order to test for my Apprentice Instructorship is that I submit a research paper about the legal ramifications to citizens who use their martial arts in a confrontation. AnimalMac wrote: >Nope, I have two in fact, one for business deals and contracts the other for court. You need to have them before you need them. Agreed! I have been thinking about this as well. Any recommendations on how to find a good lawyer for small business (perhaps MA specific?) and representation in a self-defense case? Can I narrow down a search to Business Law & Criminal Law firms respectively? Is there any way to qualify "good" other than word of mouth? I hope that I never find myself in court, but should that need arise I want to be prepared. Thanks in advance for any related leads! Basically, attack with surprise, remove any weapon advantages, latch on and run your opponent into something REALLY solid, finishing move to neutralize opponent.
