I know the stuff I am learning has been learned by others. So what? It's the process that is the beauty of it. hi megan - i think you may have misunderstood what i was tring to say -- that the biggest problem with e-mails - everyone myself included misunderstandes things written - i think partially because we arent writers by trade and as such we know what we're thinking but dont always convey it properly - anyway - as i stated i wasnt going to go into detail and give you the moves bit by bit - however in the end you did end up turning into him - i never said anything about everything leading up to the turn into him part - - i must have mis under stood you somewhat though because i thought he was on your back facing you - his right arm around your throat -right hand somewhere on your left side (shoulder, neck, ect.) and his left arm around your body - his left hand on your right side ribs - or something close to that - so i didnt see how he could be grasping his own hands together - any the statement still stand - you do need to turn into him - and the statement stands about using his momentum against him - it is very common to push him one way, then when he resists pull him/roll him in the direction he push back into you - the adage goes "if he's strong in one place, he's weak in another" - not only does this apply when grappling -per se' - silat is like this - when doing sweeps along the tiga (triangle) they know your stance/ balance is strong along a certain line - therefore they sweep you on a line that your weak on - often moveing your body before hand to off balance you - then take you in a direction that your balance is weak in - sorry if i offend - but think your a geniuos comment wasnt directed towards you - i meant it meatphorically - because we all get elated at discovery - but in truth it's been done already - but that doesnt detract the fact you discovered something on your own - when guru dan was a grade school teacher, he used to give his students pillow sticks and let them spar - after awhile most of the kids came up with their own system - by trial and error - they figured out what worked - the same can be said for a street fighter - over years of fighting - without any formal training - they are all very seasoned fighters - and dangerous - they develope their own style/system - and it works well - (think tank abbott and his pit fighting style) - he is no less a martial(meaning combat/self defense) artist - if you would like me to give you detailed instruction on how to POSSIBLY better counter his hold, i would be more then happy too - you can contact me off line - steve steve ------------------------------ From: "Patrick Christian" Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 08:16:48 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Dowels? He was at a party where three men were rolling dice to see who they would fight. When the person, who was half passed out from drinking, was chosen, the group threw a pillow case over the guys head and started beating him with a bat. My question is: Can I physically knock those guys off of the poor soul they accosted or do I have to try to get their attention? My purpose being to try to keep them from killing the man. How can I help that man without putting myself in legal trouble? This question arises because an old instructor of mine said that if we hit a man to try and get him off the person he was attacking, we could be charged as attacking the attacker. Any input? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: Buz Grover Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 12:59:03 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Re: Legal Implications of Carrying Impact Weapons This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------7BCF28DEEE8FAD665C5364F1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit You wrote: > Hey everybody, I had a quick question regarding the legal implications ofcarrying impact wapons (I'm refering to sticks specifically) in the pasenger compartment of your automobile. I dunno, dude. Here in northern Virginia a lot of folks put translucent gray covers over their license plates so they can run red lights, stop signs, weave through traffic, etc. without having to worry about concerned citizens picking up the cell phone and calling in the scofflaw's license plate number. Problem is, those plate covers are illegal. Though said covers may keep the cameras from snapping a photo of your plate as you run the red light, they are sorta like having a sign on your car reading "Yo officer, feel free to pull me over any time you please." Though things doubtless vary by jurisdiction, having a big stick in plain sight when an LEO pulls you over is a similar sort of invitation for close scrutiny. Most LEOs have a big stick hanging from their hip so I'm not sure the towel rack gambit is going to work and most cops I've known only get more interested in someone if they think they are being fed a line. Moreover, there are alternatives to taking the risk that a capricious cop will confiscate your good sticks, such as large Mag Lights, lexan ice scrapers, etc. Of course you can always tell the LEO you're on your way to/from an FMA class, but that don't work so good outside the bar at 3:00 a.m. Perhaps instead you could say they are weapons grade plutonium dipped in anthrax for your science project funded by Iraqi intelligence. . . . : ) Regards, Buz Grover - --------------7BCF28DEEE8FAD665C5364F1 Content-Type: text/x-vcard; charset=us-ascii; name="hgroveri.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: Card for Buz Grover Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="hgroveri.vcf" begin:vcard n:Grover;Buz tel;fax:703.993.3415 tel;work:703.993.3456 x-mozilla-html:FALSE org:Dept. of Instructional Improvement & Instructional Technologies;Electronic Classrooms, George Mason University version:2.1 email;internet:hgroveri@gmu.edu title:Systems Coordinator adr;quoted-printable:;;4400 University Dr.=0D=0AMail Stop 5D5;Fairfax;Virginia;22030; x-mozilla-cpt:;-1 fn:Buz Grover end:vcard - --------------7BCF28DEEE8FAD665C5364F1-- ------------------------------ From: ricklind@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 10:45:25 -0800 Subject: eskrima: San Diego Training You might try Roy Harris: Harris Academy of Martial Arts 9208 Grammercy Drive San Diego, CA 92123 (858) 279-7575 Roy is trained under Paul Vunak (JKD/FMA) and Joe Moriera (BJJ) and has sound stick work as part of his essentially JKD approach.
