From: Watch Dog Hi everyone, I understand Rick Faye just came out with a new book on panantukan. Has anyone seen it yet who can give us a review? Watchdog I have seen it and am trying to get a copy First of all I was a little bit disappointed perhaps by the quality rather than the content. What I saw was photocopied manual with ringbinding. Mass photocopying can darken photographs and that was the problem with the copy I saw. The content however seemed to excellent. Rick, who if you don't know is really rather good, makes a good definitive study of the Panantukan. Photos include Eric Paulson amongst others working the techniques. I first met Rick in the 80's when he accompanied Larry Hartsel and I can remember my first private lesson in detail with him. Hes an excellent instructor. So although I could not spend time studying the content I have the faith that it will be really a good addition to my library. What I did see certainly looked good. Having overcome the initial disappointment of the production I ordered a copy in the UK and wait for it to come. The Minnesota Kali Group has a web site at www.mnkali.com . Here's the scenario: you're in a ring with an opponent and in the middle lies a knife and a baseball bat. Which weapon would you go for? With all legal or moral issues aside, I believe a knife would bring a quick "victory". My friend believes a bat gives him better range and power. I'm sure the choice would be made by a person's level of training in the particular "weapon". I'm sure many of us would prefer an eskrima stick over a baseball bat. Let's hear some opinions. I'm a student of Mr. Faye's so perhaps I'm not unbiased, if I had much negative to say about his book I'd probably keep it to myself. My one and only criticism of the book is that it is, in this incarnation, an amateur publishing job. It's punched sheets in a 3 ring binder, xeroxed by a printer. At times the photos are a smidgen hard to interpret because what's going on in them is complicated and a few of the photos are washed out. that said, the content is very very good. This is one of the best martial arts books I've seen, if not the best. Rick starts with beginning combos like jab-cross-hook, et cetera. Then he moves on to guntings, eye flicks off of guntings, and ways of positioning ones' own and the opponents' body to make it hard to hit you and easy to hit him. There are a number of sections on two-person drills such as numerado. Also Rick talks about flow in Kali and in martial arts in general. The layout of this book is similar to that of the Jeet Kune Do books, like "JKD Kickboxing." The font is readable, and the book is generally well written and easy to understand. One thing about the fact that it's self-published is that Rick is getting all the money for his work instead of getting 10 cents on the dollar like he would from a commercial publishing house. After reading the book I'm glad this is the case because the content is second to none. There's no other book on panantukan that I'm aware of; there are other books on FMA but this one lays out the empty hand part quite clearly, Rick should be proud of this. It's $20 and worth more. ------------------------------ From: "Jason M.
